Tezos is an open-source proof-of-stake blockchain best known for on-chain governance and self-amendment, meaning the protocol upgrades itself through stakeholder voting instead of contentious hard forks. XTZ, often called tez, is the native asset used for transaction fees, staking and delegation, and voting weight in protocol amendments. Smart contracts run in a stack-based language called Michelson, with higher-level languages such as LIGO and SmartPy compiling down to it.

Tezos was created in 2014 by Arthur and Kathleen Breitman. The project raised broad attention through a 2017 crowdfunding round and launched the following year. Development is not controlled by a single company. Multiple independent teams contribute to the protocol and the Tezos Foundation supports the ecosystem. Since launch the chain has activated a long series of named upgrades, from Athens in 2019 through Seoul, Tallinn and Ushuaia, which activated on 30 June 2026.
Consensus is proof of stake. Operators called bakers stake tez and produce blocks, while holders who do not run a node can delegate or stake to a baker without giving up custody. The distinctive part is amendment. The self-amendment process runs in five automatic periods: Proposal, Exploration, Cooldown, Promotion and Adoption. Each lasts 14 cycles, roughly 14 days. Only delegates vote, and voting power equals a delegate's staking balance, meaning its own staked tez plus tez delegated to it. If a proposal passes the final vote, the network activates the new protocol automatically at the end of the Adoption period.
XTZ pays transaction and storage fees, is staked or delegated to secure consensus and earn rewards, and determines governance weight during amendment periods. It is also the settlement asset for the NFT, DeFi and gaming applications built on the chain.
On-chain governance is the core differentiator. Upgrades that would need a coordinated hard fork elsewhere are executed by the protocol itself after a formal stakeholder vote, and the amendment record is public. Tezos also pushed formal verification early, with Michelson designed so contract behaviour can be reasoned about rigorously.
Cardano also emphasises formal methods and research-led design but handles upgrades differently. Polkadot has forkless upgrades too, but organises the network as a relay chain with parachains rather than a single self-amending layer 1. Algorand shares the fast-finality proof-of-stake profile without stakeholder-voted protocol replacement. Compared with Ethereum, Tezos trades a much larger application ecosystem for a more automated upgrade path.
Bakers stake tez as collateral, and misbehaviour such as double baking is punished through slashing after an accusation is included on chain. Delegation lets small holders contribute stake without running infrastructure. Because upgrades pass through a fixed multi-period vote with supermajority and quorum rules, changes to consensus are slow and visible rather than sudden.
Governance participation is limited to delegates, so voting power concentrates around large bakers and staking services. The amendment cycle is deliberate, so urgent fixes still take time unless handled outside the normal path. Ecosystem activity is smaller than on the largest smart contract platforms, which affects liquidity and tooling. Some features in recent upgrades, including enshrined liquid staking and post-quantum keys, are described as testnet only or behind feature flags and should not be assumed live on mainnet.
Tezos was one of the first networks to treat protocol upgrades as a governed, routine process rather than a political crisis, and it has run that process repeatedly for years. That record is useful evidence that formal on-chain governance can work at scale.
XTZ has been listed on major centralised exchanges for years and is also available on decentralised venues in its own ecosystem. Regional availability and pairs change, so check the live market data on this page before trading.
Tezos-native wallets such as Temple and Kukai support holding, delegating and staking XTZ directly, and hardware wallets including Ledger integrate with them for cold storage. Delegation does not transfer custody, so you can earn rewards while keeping your keys. Leaving XTZ on an exchange is simplest but means the exchange controls the coins.
