Sonic is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built for decentralized finance by Sonic Labs. Its documentation calls it "the highest-performing EVM L1" and claims 400,000 transactions per second with sub-second finality. Sonic succeeds Fantom: the foundation rebranded in 2024, mainnet launched on January 7, 2025, and FTM migrated to S at 1:1. Chain ID is 146.
Official resources:
Sonic continues Fantom, whose Opera network launched in 2019 under Michael Kong, with Andre Cronje as its best known technical figure. Governance has changed repeatedly: reporting in June 2026 described three board members resigning together, including Cronje as chief technology officer, Kong, and chairman David Richardson, with Matt Visser named chief executive after an earlier change in February 2026.
Sonic reaches consensus using asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance combined with directed acyclic graphs, which produces its finality claim: the docs say transactions become "irreversible in under a second," with "zero risk of rollbacks or reorganizations." Validators must lock at least 500,000 S to produce blocks. Storage splits into LiveDB, holding current world state, and ArchiveDB, holding all history, so validators run LiveDB only and prune live without going offline.
The documentation states S "has multiple roles within the network, such as paying for transaction fees, staking, running validators, and participating in governance." Staking is delegated, with a 14-day withdrawal wait, and reward rates are targeted rather than fixed, at 3.5% when half the network is staked. Emissions and burns coexist: 47,625,000 tokens are issued annually for six years, and any unused during the year are burned.
Fee Monetization is the clearest differentiator. On Sonic, 10% of a transaction fee goes to validators and the remaining 90% routes to a FeeM contract, where off-chain oracles trace gas per registered contract and release rewards once a quorum confirms, split so payouts cannot exceed the fee collected. The Gateway fail-safe is second: if the bridge fails for 14 consecutive days, users recover funds on Ethereum.
Avalanche uses a different consensus family and a subnet architecture, Sei rebuilt around a parallelized EVM, Berachain ties consensus rewards to liquidity provision, and Monad focuses on parallel execution. Sonic's bets are aBFT with a DAG, the LiveDB and ArchiveDB split for validator cost, and FeeM for developer revenue. It is also a rebrand of an established chain rather than a fresh launch.
Sonic is secured by proof of stake with a minimum validator lockup of 500,000 S, backed by slashing. Its consensus preserves correctness while a sufficient share of stake is honest, without synchronous network assumptions. The documentation states Sonic has been audited across its core components, and the Gateway fail-safe bounds the worst case of a bridge failure.
The 400,000 transactions per second figure is stated capacity, not observed sustained load, and is best read as a design ceiling. Leadership changed twice in a short period, with founding technical leadership departing in 2026. Supply combines substantial issuance with burns, so net direction depends on utilization, and FeeM depends on off-chain oracles reaching quorum, a trust assumption outside consensus.
Sonic is one of the few examples of an established Layer 1 attempting a full technical and brand reset rather than slowly fading. DAG-based finality, live-pruning storage and a protocol-level developer fee share address real problems rather than cosmetic ones.
S is listed on a range of centralized exchanges, including venues that supported FTM through the migration. On-chain it is the native gas asset and trades on decentralized exchanges deployed to Sonic, and users can bridge in through the Sonic Gateway. Holders of legacy FTM should check the current migration status, since it ran on a defined schedule.
S is the native currency of an EVM chain, so any wallet supporting custom EVM networks holds it, and the documentation lists Rabby, MetaMask, OKX Wallet, Trust Wallet and Bitget Wallet. Add the network using chain ID 146 with the official RPC and verify balances on the official explorer. If you stake, remember the 14-day unstaking wait.
