Gala is a web3 entertainment company that runs its own layer 1 blockchain and builds consumer products on it, organized around four pillars: Games, Film, Music and DeFi. Its settlement layer is GalaChain, which the project's SDK describes as a layer 1 for web3 gaming that "is based on Hyperledger Fabric and developed by Gala Games." GALA is the gas token and the unit of node rewards, and exists on Ethereum, GalaChain and Solana.

Gala was co-founded in 2019 by Eric Schiermeyer, Michael McCarthy and Wright Thurston. Schiermeyer co-founded Zynga, the company behind FarmVille and Mafia Wars, and McCarthy also came from Zynga. Thurston's background is in cryptocurrency mining and blockchain patents. Gala launched with a node program letting supporters run infrastructure for a share of the daily distribution, then built its own chain. In May 2023 it burned roughly 20.9 billion tokens during a contract upgrade.
GalaChain is a permissioned layer 1 on Hyperledger Fabric rather than a public proof of stake network, which changes its trust model. Gala's four-phase decentralization roadmap moves consensus from Raft to Byzantine Fault Tolerance while holding up to 1500 transactions per second, distributes peers geographically, brings Founder's Nodes into validation, and adds a GalaChain Improvement Proposal system. Validation today is not decentralized, which the company says was necessary to scale.
Founder's Nodes are run by licensed operators who receive a share of the daily GALA distribution only if the node was active for a minimum time in the prior 24 hours. Licenses can be tokenized as transferable NFTs.
GALA is the gas token for GalaChain, and the tokenomics documentation states that "all $GALA used as gas by the growing ecosystem of web3 games is burned." It is also the unit of node rewards and the currency for in-game purchases. Max supply is 50,000,000,000, and "every day, the emissions are 0.25% of the difference between the Total Supply and the Max Supply," so issuance falls as supply nears the cap while burns push the other way.
Most gaming tokens sit on someone else's chain and depend on third-party studios for demand. Gala owns the full stack: the chain, the wallet, the exchange, the launchpad and the games, plus film and music divisions most peers do not attempt.
Immutable provides rollup infrastructure for third-party studios and does not build first-party titles at scale. Ronin is a chain built by Sky Mavis around Axie Infinity. The Sandbox is a virtual world and creator platform rather than a chain. WEMIX is a publisher-operated chain with a similar vertically integrated model, Gala's closest analogue. Gala's difference is the breadth of its non-gaming pillars.
GalaChain uses Raft consensus in a permissioned Hyperledger Fabric architecture, so validation is done by a controlled operator set rather than an open validator market. That favors throughput and control and depends on those operators behaving honestly, a different assumption from a public proof of stake chain. The bridges between networks are a further attack surface.
Gala is one of the few crypto entertainment projects that has continuously shipped consumer products, run its own chain and kept a node operator base across multiple cycles. It is a clear test of whether owning both content and infrastructure produces durable demand for a network token.
GALA is widely listed, trading on major centralized exchanges, on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum and Solana, and on GalaSwap. Because it exists on three networks, the common costly mistake is withdrawing on the wrong one, so check which network the exchange sends on.
GALA on Ethereum is held in any EVM wallet, the Solana deployment requires a Solana wallet, and balances used inside Gala's products live in the Gala wallet on GalaChain. Pair a hardware wallet with a software interface for long-term holdings. GalaChain balances now factor into node reward eligibility, so where tokens sit affects rewards.
