What Is Beam (BEAM)?

Beam runs its own EVM-compatible blockchain built on the Avalanche technology stack, and now describes itself as an innovation lab that builds, funds and accelerates frontier technology. Its documentation calls the network "an open-source sovereign blockchain network focused on frontier technology." BEAM is the gas asset and governance token, originating as an ERC-20 on Ethereum that bridges onto Beam. A live RPC query confirms the chain is producing blocks under chain ID 4337.

Who Founded Beam? (History)

Beam grew out of Merit Circle, a gaming DAO formed in 2021 as a play-to-earn scholarship organization. Beam publishes no team page. Marco van den Heuvel is widely identified in public interviews and profiles as co-founder and chief executive, though Beam's own documentation names neither him nor co-founder Mark Borsten.

Following DAO proposals, Merit Circle's MC token migrated into BEAM from late October 2023 at a ratio widely reported as one to one hundred. In May 2025 Beam widened its mandate, and its mission page now calls the team "an innovation lab, not a single product or a static network."

How Beam Works

Beam operates its own Avalanche network, called a subnet in its documentation and an Avalanche L1 in Avalanche's current terminology, with a dedicated validator set rather than shared C-Chain block space. Fees are payable only in BEAM and are split between validator rewards and a burn, with the ratio still under consideration.

The Horizon upgrade is documented as the move to permissionless proof of stake. Validating will require an ERC-721 node token alongside staked BEAM, with rewards drawn from fees and grants. No launch date is published.

BEAM Token Utility

• Gas: the only accepted payment for transaction fees on Beam.
• Validation: staked to validate and propose blocks after Horizon, or delegated to node operators.
• Governance: voting on protocol changes, plus veto rights over certain Foundation decisions.
• Payments: accepted in ecosystem applications for in-game tokens and NFTs.
• Burning: fees may route to burn contracts, and any holder can burn voluntarily. Beam reports roughly 38 percent of the original supply already burned.

What Makes Beam Unique?

Beam owns its execution environment rather than renting block space, so it sets its own fee parameters. Its SDK is unusual in separating a self-custodial player flow from a policy-driven custodial one, letting a studio choose per feature how much wallet friction to expose.

How Beam Differs from Similar Projects

Ronin (RON) is tied to one publisher's titles, while Beam spreads exposure across gaming, AI, compute and trading. Immutable (IMX) anchors to Ethereum rollup infrastructure, whereas Beam runs a sovereign network with its own validator set. Gala (GALA) publishes first-party games, while Beam sells infrastructure and capital to third-party teams.

Use Cases of Beam

• Paying gas for transfers, deployments and dApp activity.
• Staking and delegating once Horizon ships.
• Buying in-game assets and NFTs on Sphere.
• Moving value between Ethereum and Beam.

How Beam Is Secured

The chain uses the Avalanche consensus stack with its own validator set. Governance adds scope limits, co-approval rights, an Emergency Supervisor and onchain vetoes. One caveat is stated openly: in Beam's LayerZero repository, contracts from LayerZero Labs are audited, while those built on top by the Foundation are not.

Risks and Considerations

• Horizon has no published launch date, so proof-of-stake validation and its staking rewards are not yet live.
• The emissions schedule is not fully published.
• The 2025 repositioning is a real risk for anyone who bought a gaming-chain thesis.
• Some Beam-authored omnichain contracts are not formally audited, and bridging carries messaging risk.
• Treasury value is concentrated in a few ecosystem positions.

Why Beam Matters

Beam is one of the few gaming-origin chains that survived the 2021 play-to-earn cycle, migrated its token and then publicly rewrote its mandate rather than stalling. It is a working example of the sovereign-network trade-off: control of your own gas policy in exchange for bootstrapping a validator set alone.
