Caldera is a rollup infrastructure company. It runs a hosted service that lets a team launch its own Ethereum Layer 2 chain without assembling the stack itself, and a cross-chain layer called Metalayer that routes assets and messages between those chains and the wider ecosystem. ERA is the network token that came out of that business.
The simplest framing: most teams that want their own chain do not want to operate sequencers, provers, bridges, explorers and data availability pipelines. Caldera operates those, and the chains it deploys settle to Ethereum. Its second problem, the one Metalayer addresses, is that a world of many small chains fragments liquidity, so the company built a routing layer over its own rollups and other networks.
Official sources:
Caldera was founded in 2022 by Matt Katz and Parker Jou, who serves as chief technology officer. The pitch from the start was time to launch: reducing the work of standing up an application-specific Layer 2 from months to hours.
The company raised roughly 9 million dollars across two early rounds announced in February 2023, led by Sequoia Capital and Dragonfly. A 15 million dollar Series A led by Founders Fund followed in July 2024, with Dragonfly, Sequoia, Arkstream and Lattice participating, bringing disclosed funding to about 25 million dollars. The ERA token followed in 2025, and Caldera announced ERA going live natively on Arbitrum One on December 4, 2025 as the first step of an on-chain expansion program.
Caldera has two products, and they solve different problems.
Rollup Engine This is the deployment and hosting side. A team picks a stack, and the documentation covers Arbitrum Nitro, Optimism Bedrock and ZK Stack. It can choose a custom native gas token instead of ETH, an alternative data availability layer instead of posting everything to Ethereum calldata, decentralized sequencing, and guardian nodes.
Metalayer This is the interoperability side, documented as a three-layer system. An execution layer parses a request, queries quotes from many providers at once, picks a route on cost, speed, security and liquidity, and tracks it. A bridge provider layer fulfills it, spanning intent networks such as Across, Relay and Eco solvers, canonical bridges for Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and zkSync, and omnichain standards including MetaToken and LayerZero OFT. A settlement layer handles messaging through a sovereign Hyperlane deployment with an independent validator set, plus cross-chain state reads.
MetaToken deserves a note of its own. It is Caldera's hub-and-spoke omnichain token standard, designed so a token keeps one unified supply and the same address on every chain it reaches, removing the wrapped-asset sprawl that normally follows a multi-chain rollout.
ERA is described by Caldera as the network asset for the Metalayer ecosystem, used for cross-rollup fees, validator or solver collateral, and governance over protocol parameters, upgrades and treasury allocation.
It is worth being precise here. Caldera's developer documentation index covers the Rollup Engine and Metalayer in detail but contains no ERA token or staking specification. Most published ERA staking mechanics come from blog posts and secondary coverage rather than a protocol spec, so treat the finer points as subject to change.
Caldera is one of the few rollup-as-a-service operators that did not stop at deployment. Plenty of vendors will spin up a chain; far fewer shipped a routing layer to reconnect the chains they created. The bridge aggregator is also unusually pragmatic: rather than forcing every transfer through Caldera's own path, it routes to whichever competing provider wins on the requested criteria. MetaToken is the other differentiator, since one address and one unified supply across chains is a real reduction in operational complexity.
Caldera is not a Layer 1 and not a single Layer 2. Comparing it to Arbitrum or Optimism is a category error: those are chains, while Caldera is a service that deploys chains using their stacks among others.
Against other rollup-as-a-service providers, the interoperability layer is the separating feature. Against general bridging protocols, Metalayer is an aggregator with a home ecosystem rather than a single bridge competing for every route. Against modular data availability projects such as Celestia, Caldera sits a layer higher: it consumes data availability options rather than providing one.
Chains deployed through the Rollup Engine inherit the security properties of the stack they use and the settlement layer they post to, which is Ethereum. The usual rollup considerations apply: sequencer centralization, proof maturity, and, where an alternative data availability layer is selected, a weaker data guarantee than posting to Ethereum directly. Metalayer's settlement path uses a sovereign Hyperlane deployment with an independent validator set, and Caldera publishes Metalayer audit reports in its documentation.
The ERA token contract deserves a direct read, and the result is important. On Ethereum mainnet, ERA lives at 0xE2AD0BF751834f2fbdC62A41014f84d67cA1de2A. A live read on September 11, 2026 returned Caldera for name(), ERA for symbol(), 18 decimals, and a total supply of exactly 1,000,000,000 ERA, which matches the published figure.
The address is not a plain token. It is an ERC-1967 proxy pointing at an implementation at 0x1a91caf199a6b309d9c74a9b43aed8c6674d6e43, and the verified source of that implementation is a contract named CalderaToken, built on UUPS upgradeability, ERC20Permit, ERC20Votes and Ownable2Step. Its constants read:
MAX_SUPPLY = 10_000_000_000 ether, ten times the 1 billion figure commonly described as fixedINITIAL_MINT_CAP_BIPS = 500, a 5 percent ceiling on how much can be minted at once, measured against the current total supplyMINIMUM_MINT_INTERVAL = 365 daysThe owner, which read as 0xf001a29287d960e4cbddb5ebbe8289a1a5cdbf3a, can call mint once per year within that 5 percent cap up to the 10 billion ceiling, and can upgrade the implementation. Counterweights are written into the code: lowerMintCap can only reduce the cap and never raise it, and setting the owner to the zero address permanently disables upgrades, state changes and minting. At the time of this read the owner was not the zero address, nextMint had already elapsed, and no mint above the initial 1 billion had occurred.
If the modular thesis holds and application chains keep multiplying, the hard problem stops being deployment and becomes reconnection. Caldera is one of the clearer attempts to own both halves: deploy the chains, then route between them with a token standard that avoids fragmenting supply. Whether ERA accrues value from that is a separate question from whether the infrastructure is useful.
ERA trades on a range of centralized venues and on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum and Arbitrum One. Availability and trading pairs vary by jurisdiction.
ERA has commonly been available on:
