LayerZero is an omnichain messaging protocol. It lets a smart contract on one blockchain send an arbitrary message to a contract on another, and lets the receiving application decide which parties must attest to that message before it is accepted. It is infrastructure, not a chain: it moves verified messages rather than holding funds in a bridge contract, and token bridging is one application of that. ZRO is the native token, used for governance and, when governance enables it, for capturing protocol fees.
Official resources:
LayerZero Labs was founded in 2021 by Bryan Pellegrino, Ryan Zarick and Caleb Banister. The first version used an Ultra Light Node design that pinned every application to one oracle and one relayer. Version 2, deployed in early 2024, replaced that fixed pair with a configurable marketplace of verifiers. ZRO launched in June 2024 with a claim distribution to early users and a fixed supply of one billion units.
An immutable Endpoint contract is deployed on every supported chain. An application calls send on the source Endpoint, which packages the message with source and destination identifiers, addresses and payload.
Verification is where LayerZero differs from a conventional bridge. The application chooses one or more Decentralised Verifier Networks, each of which independently observes the source chain and attests to the payload hash on the destination. The Endpoint enforces an X of Y of N configuration: the application sets how many of its chosen verifiers must agree before a message is valid. Delivery is separate, with an Executor calling the receiving contract once the threshold is met.
The core pieces are the Endpoint contracts, the message libraries that encode packets, the verifier networks and the Executors. On top sit the Omnichain Application interface and the Omnichain Fungible Token standard, which lets a token exist natively across many chains by burning on the source and minting on the destination instead of wrapping.
ZRO is primarily a governance asset. Its most concrete function is an on-chain referendum in which holders periodically vote on whether to activate a protocol fee; when that switch is on, an extra charge applies to messages and the proceeds buy back and burn ZRO. Governance has voted in favour of activating it, though holders should verify the current state.
The security model. Most cross chain systems ask every user to accept the same trust assumption. LayerZero pushes that choice up to the application, so a low value game and a large stablecoin issuer can use the same protocol with completely different verification requirements.
Wormhole verifies messages through a fixed set of guardian nodes, so every application shares one trust assumption, and Axelar routes messages through its own blockchain, adding a consensus hop. Cosmos IBC uses on-chain light clients, a stronger trust model but harder to extend to arbitrary chains. LayerZero sits between these and depends on the application choosing sensibly.
Documented uses include native multi chain tokens that avoid wrapped representations, cross chain swaps and bridging front ends, lending strategies that move collateral between networks, governance where a vote on one chain executes on another, and contract to contract messaging.
The Endpoint contracts are immutable and permissionless, so no protocol upgrade can alter an application's trust assumptions. Verification depends on the verifier networks an application selected and the threshold it set, making security per application rather than uniform. Executors affect liveness but not validity, since one cannot force through an unverified message.
The flexibility that makes LayerZero powerful also transfers responsibility to developers. An application configuring a single verifier, or verifiers that are not genuinely independent, has a weak security model even though the protocol is sound, and users cannot see that configuration without inspecting it. Cross chain messaging remains one of the most attacked areas in the industry. ZRO's value capture depends on governance keeping the fee switch on.
LayerZero is one of the most widely used pieces of cross chain infrastructure and is the messaging layer behind many multi chain deployments of major assets. Its main contribution is conceptual: it treats cross chain security as a parameter owned by the application rather than a fixed property of the bridge.
ZRO is listed on most large centralised exchanges and trades on decentralised exchanges across the networks where it is deployed. It exists natively on multiple chains, so confirm which network a withdrawal will use.
ZRO can be held in standard EVM wallets and hardware wallets on the chains where it is deployed, and in the appropriate native wallet on non EVM chains. Because it exists natively across several networks rather than as wrapped copies, moving between chains uses the protocol's own transfer path.
