Sun, ticker SUN, is the governance token of SUN.io, a decentralised finance platform on the TRON blockchain. SUN.io bundles several products under one interface, including an automated market maker exchange, a stablecoin swap, liquidity mining, staking and a token launch venue. The "[New]" label reflects a 2021 redenomination in which the original SUN token was replaced by a new contract at a ratio of one old token to one thousand new.
Official resources:
SUN launched in September 2020, closely associated with TRON and its founder Justin Sun, and was marketed as TRON's first fair launch DeFi token with no pre mine or investor allocation. In 2021 it was redenominated onto a new contract, the old token was renamed SUNOLD, and its role shifted from a mining reward asset to a governance token. SUN.io then absorbed JustSwap, TRON's original automated market maker, rebranding it SunSwap. Later additions include SunPump and the SunX perpetual futures exchange.
SUN.io is a set of smart contracts on TRON. The exchange uses constant product pools for general pairs and a curve style design for stablecoin pairs, where assets trade near parity and slippage matters most. Liquidity providers deposit paired assets, receive pool tokens and earn trading fees plus mining rewards set by governance.
SUN is locked into a vote escrow contract to mint veSUN, with longer locks producing more voting weight. veSUN holders vote on proposals, direct incentives between pools and receive a share of platform fees. Revenue from certain products buys SUN on the open market and burns it.
The components are SunSwap, the automated market maker that grew out of JustSwap; the stablecoin swap module; liquidity mining farms; the veSUN vote escrow and SUN DAO governance layer; SunPump, a bonding curve launch platform that migrates graduated tokens into SunSwap liquidity; and SunX, a perpetual futures venue formerly known as SunPerp.
SUN is used for governance through veSUN, for directing liquidity mining emissions and for claiming a share of protocol fees. It is also the target of the buyback and burn programme, where product revenue is converted into SUN that is destroyed. Holding SUN without locking it confers no governance weight.
SUN aggregates most of TRON's native decentralised finance activity into a single governance asset. Rather than one token per product, spot swaps, stable swaps, launches and derivatives all route value back to the same token through fee sharing and buybacks. Because TRON fees are low and its stablecoin float is large, SUN.io's volume leans heavily toward stablecoin trading.
Against Uniswap, SUN sits on TRON and has an explicit fee share and burn design, whereas UNI's fee capture has been a long running governance debate. Against Curve, it uses a similar vote escrow model across a wider product set. Against JUST, another TRON governance token, SUN focuses on trading and liquidity rather than lending and stablecoin issuance.
SUN is used to vote on emissions and parameters, to earn a share of fees and as an incentive asset in liquidity programmes. The platform is used for swapping TRC-20 tokens, trading stablecoins with low slippage, providing liquidity, launching new tokens and taking leveraged positions.
SUN.io inherits the security of TRON, which uses delegated proof of stake operated by a limited set of elected super representatives. Contract security depends on the platform's own code, published on GitHub and audited. Governance security depends on how veSUN is distributed, since concentrated locked positions translate into control over emissions.
Concentration is the central consideration. TRON's validator set is small by design, and SUN governance can be heavily influenced by large lockers. Association with Justin Sun means headline and regulatory risk affecting him or TRON can transmit to SUN. Liquidity provision carries impermanent loss, and stablecoin pools carry the depeg risk of whatever they hold, including TRON's own USDD. Launch platforms attract many short lived speculative tokens, buybacks depend on continuing revenue, and contract risk remains after audits.
TRON carries a large share of global stablecoin transfer activity, and SUN.io is the main venue where that activity meets on-chain trading. For anyone assessing where TRON's economic value accrues on chain rather than on exchanges, SUN is the most direct expression.
SUN is listed on several centralised exchanges and trades natively on SunSwap and other TRON decentralised exchanges. Some venues still carry the retired SUNOLD contract in historical data, so confirm the current contract before buying.
SUN is a TRC-20 token, so it can be held in TRON compatible wallets such as TronLink and in hardware wallets supporting TRON. Locking SUN for veSUN requires interacting with the contracts directly, and because locks have a fixed term the tokens are not transferable until expiry.
