eCash is a proof of work payment network descended from Bitcoin by way of Bitcoin Cash, built by the Bitcoin ABC team. Its defining feature is combining Nakamoto proof of work with Avalanche consensus alongside it, which lets a UTXO chain offer fast finality and staking rewards. After a redenomination, its base unit also carries two decimal places rather than eight.
Official resources:
The official site credits Amaury Sechet as founder, noting he "created Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and eCash (XEC)." The current team is Bitcoin ABC, with Antony Zegers as chief executive. The lineage runs through two splits: Bitcoin Cash forked from Bitcoin in 2017, and in November 2020 it split again over a proposed coinbase rule, with the ABC side trading as BCHA. On 1 July 2021 BCHA was rebranded to eCash and redenominated at one BCHA to one million XEC, a unit change rather than a token swap.
eCash runs Nakamoto proof of work for block production and layers Avalanche consensus on top. Post consensus lets nodes agree on which blocks are accepted, and pre consensus extends the same machinery to unconfirmed transactions; the roadmap lists both as complete. The site claims settlement in about three seconds against roughly an hour for strong finality on Bitcoin.
Participation in the Avalanche quorum is what eCash calls staking. Each stake must be at least 100,000,000.00 XEC per UTXO, have 2016 or more block confirmations, roughly two weeks without movement, and be of the Pay To Public Key Hash type. There is no wallet only option: stakers run a fully validating node with Avalanche enabled. Rewards activated on 15 November 2023, a first for a Bitcoin based implementation.
XEC is the network's native money: it pays transaction fees, funds miner rewards, and serves as the stake qualifying a node for Avalanche rewards. Because the redenomination scaled the unit down by a factor of one million, the supply cap mirrors Bitcoin's 21 million scaled to 21 trillion XEC. The site states more than 90 percent has been mined and inflation was under 1 percent as of 2025, trending toward zero.
Most Bitcoin derivatives change block size, mining algorithm or script rules while keeping longest chain rules intact. eCash keeps proof of work but adds a stake weighted agreement layer, giving it rapid finality, staking rewards for non miners, and what the project calls fork free upgrades.
Bitcoin Cash, its closest relative, scales through larger blocks and standard Nakamoto consensus, so unconfirmed transactions carry more reversal risk. eCash is sometimes listed as a smart contract platform, but its scripting is an extended Bitcoin script set, not a general purpose virtual machine; an EVM subnet is on the roadmap under planning.
The intended use is payments at scale, with a stated target of one billion daily transactions. Practical uses today include peer to peer transfers, merchant acceptance through PayButton, token issuance with eTokens, and running a node for staking rewards.
Proof of work orders blocks and makes rewriting history costly. Avalanche then attests to which blocks and transactions the network accepts, weighted by staked coins. Because both layers must be subverted, the project argues an attacker needs most of the hash rate and most of the staked eCash at once, so security also rests on well distributed, high uptime nodes.
The staking minimum plus a node requirement puts direct participation out of reach for small holders and concentrates the quorum among larger operators. Development is centered on a single team, which is efficient but a concentration risk. Several roadmap items, including UTXO commitments and an EVM subnet, remain in planning, so headline throughput targets are aspirations. Exchange and wallet support is also thinner than for older Bitcoin family chains.
eCash is the most serious attempt to graft a stake weighted consensus layer onto a Bitcoin derived chain without abandoning proof of work. If the design holds, it gives a UTXO chain fast finality and a staking economy while keeping mining.
XEC is listed on a range of centralized exchanges, several of which applied the BCHA rebrand and redenomination automatically for existing holders. Because the ticker changed and the unit was rescaled by a factor of one million, confirm the units an exchange quotes before ordering.
Cashtab is the primary wallet and supports both XEC and eTokens. Electrum ABC is the desktop option and supports hardware wallets for cold storage. Staking needs a fully validating node, not a wallet. eCash uses its own address format, so verify a receiving address is an eCash address and not a Bitcoin Cash address before sending.
