What Is Ultima (ULTIMA)?

Ultima is a payments-focused ecosystem built around its own Layer 1, which the project calls SMART Blockchain. Its whitepaper states the aim of a cryptocurrency suited to everyday spending rather than speculation, supported by a wallet, a debit card, marketplaces and a rewards mechanism it calls splitting. A BEP-20 version also exists on BNB Chain. Read the risks section carefully: the distribution model and the named founder have both drawn substantial third-party criticism.

Who Founded Ultima? (History)

The whitepaper traces the project to Switzerland in 2016, names Alex Reinhardt as the founder of Smart Blockchain, and places the chain's launch in early 2023 with DeFi-U later that year. Reinhardt was previously associated with PlatinCoin and PLC Ultima, separate tokens that drew regulatory complaints and consumer warnings.

How Ultima Works

The chain is a delegated proof of stake network on which ULTIMA is native, but the economically important mechanism is splitting.

Splitting runs through what the whitepaper calls delegated liquidity pools, each a wallet of long-locked tokens the document says has no owner. Entitlement is represented by shares called splits: a user freezes split tokens, and each day a fixed amount of ULTIMA from the pool is divided across all frozen splits, so a reward depends on how many splits a holder has and how long they have been frozen. A halving rule halves the daily amount every 10,000,000 blocks. Splits are bought as licenses, so rewards are gated by purchases from the operator rather than by open staking or mining.

ULTIMA Token Utility

ULTIMA is the gas and settlement asset of its own chain and the reward currency of the splitting system. Maximum supply is fixed at 100,000 tokens, extremely small by cryptocurrency standards.

The distinguishing features are the very small fixed supply, the splitting mechanism, and the breadth of consumer products attached to one token, distributed through a community the whitepaper describes as exceeding three million people.

How Ultima Differs from Similar Projects

Payment coins such as Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dash and Nano distribute through open mining or a genesis allocation. Ultima's distribution flows through purchased licenses, its rewards follow pool rules the operator sets, and much of the stack is operator-run.

SMART Blockchain uses delegated proof of stake, where a limited elected validator set produces blocks, and Ultima publishes a block explorer. The roadmap lists a CertiK audit in early 2024; verify it directly, and note that a token audit does not cover the reward system or the operator's solvency.

Risks and Considerations

The reward model depends structurally on continued sales. Licenses are bought from the operator, and pools pay a fixed daily amount divided across all frozen splits, so rewards per split fall as participation grows and fall again at each halving. They track the operator's rules, not protocol revenue.

The founder's earlier ventures carry a documented record. Austria's Financial Market Supervisory Authority filed a complaint concerning Platincoin, Germany's Stiftung Warentest published a consumer warning about PLC Ultima, and Mongolia's Financial Regulatory Commission issued a fraud warning naming it. Analytics firm Crystal Intelligence concluded PLC Ultima's model was opaque and appeared to benefit its founder. Those findings concern PLC Ultima and Platincoin, not ULTIMA, but involve the same founder.

Payout complaints are widespread, with public review platforms carrying many reports that pool payouts were disabled or their conditions changed. The small supply and large locked share also make the tradable float thin, and counterparty risk sits with the company.

Native ULTIMA is held in SMART Wallet, which is self-custodial and pairs with the SMART Defender card. The BEP-20 version can be held in any BNB Chain wallet, including MetaMask, Trust Wallet or a Ledger. The two live on different networks, so confirm which you hold before sending. Tokens frozen in splitting pools are locked under the operator's rules.
