Dash is a payments cryptocurrency descended from the Bitcoin codebase that has run since January 2014. Its documentation states the goal plainly: to be the most user-friendly and scalable payments cryptocurrency in the world. What separates it from a plain fork is a second tier of collateralized masternodes delivering fast settlement, reorganization protection, optional mixing and a self-funding treasury.
Official resources:
Dash was created by software developer Evan Duffield and released on January 18, 2014 as XCoin, renamed Darkcoin that February and then Dash, short for digital cash, in March 2015.
The launch was not clean: a difficulty bug caused an instamine in the first 48 hours producing roughly 1.8 million coins, about a tenth of eventual maximum supply. Duffield proposed relaunching, the network declined, and the distribution stood. Development is led by Dash Core Group, Inc., funded from the treasury and answerable to masternode votes.
Dash runs two tiers. Miners produce blocks roughly every 2.6 minutes using X11, a chain of eleven hash functions. Above them sit masternodes, requiring 1,000 DASH as collateral, and evonodes, requiring 4,000 DASH and running the platform layer. Masternodes do not mine; they form the quorums that deliver Dash's distinguishing services and they vote on governance.
Since the Dash Core v20 hard fork in December 2023 the block subsidy splits three ways: 60 percent to masternodes, 20 percent to miners, 20 percent to the governance budget. It falls about 7.14 percent every 210,240 blocks, roughly once a year, so emission declines gradually instead of halving. Maximum supply is capped below 19 million coins.
DASH is first a payment asset for transfers and merchant settlement. It is also the collateral behind a masternode or evonode, and collateral size sets governance weight: one vote per 1,000 DASH for a masternode, four per 4,000 DASH for an evonode. DASH also pays network fees, including contested username registration.
Dash has run a self-funded on-chain treasury since 2014, so the protocol funds its own development without a foundation endowment. ChainLocks is the other distinctive piece: a quorum signs the canonical block, removing most of the value of renting hash power to reorganize it.
Bitcoin and Litecoin have no second tier and no treasury. Monero enforces privacy on every transaction at the protocol level, whereas Dash's CoinJoin is opt-in and leaves ordinary transactions transparent. Decred shares the treasury and stakeholder-governance idea but uses ticket-based staking rather than fixed collateral.
Dash combines proof of work with masternode quorums. X11 mining provides the base layer and ChainLocks adds a signed finality layer, so long-range reorganization, the classic threat to a smaller proof-of-work chain, is largely neutralized.
In April 2023 the US Securities and Exchange Commission's complaint against Bittrex named DASH among tokens it alleged to be unregistered securities. Bittrex settled, so the claim was never tested and DASH's US status is unresolved. CoinJoin has led some exchanges in some jurisdictions to restrict privacy-capable assets. The instamine is permanent, collateral concentrates influence among large holders, and the payments thesis now competes with stablecoins on cheap chains.
Dash is one of the longest-running experiments in a blockchain that pays for its own upkeep: the treasury has funded a development organization for a decade through masternode votes rather than venture rounds. ChainLocks answers a real weakness of small proof-of-work chains.
DASH is listed on a broad set of centralized exchanges, including Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, KuCoin, HTX, Gate and MEXC. Pairs are usually quoted against USDT, USDC and BTC, plus fiat markets in EUR and TRY. Availability varies by country.
Dash Core Wallet is the full-node desktop option and the practical choice for a masternode. DashPay provides mobile wallets, and Dash Electrum is a lighter desktop client. Trezor and Ledger hardware wallets support DASH. If you plan to run a masternode, set the wallet up before funding it, since collateral must sit untouched in one output.
