What Is Numeraire (NMR)?

Numeraire is the staking token of Numerai, a quantitative market neutral hedge fund that outsources its models to a network of anonymous data scientists. Numerai publishes a free, obfuscated dataset of stock features, participants model it, and their predictions form a stake weighted Meta Model the fund trades. NMR is what participants stake on their submissions: good scores earn more NMR, bad scores burn part of the stake.

Who Founded Numeraire? (History)

Numerai was founded in San Francisco in late 2015 by Richard Craib, who still leads it. The 2017 whitepaper is credited to Craib, Geoffrey Bradway and Xander Dunn, with Joey Krug. The website does not list leadership, but says the company is backed by Union Square Ventures and a Renaissance Technologies co-founder. The token launched on Ethereum in 2017 without a public sale, distributed to data scientists already competing in its tournaments.

How Numeraire Works

Numerai runs on a weekly cycle. Each dataset row is a stock at a point in time, grouped into weekly eras, with features obfuscated so participants cannot identify the company. Models are scored on correlation with the target and on Meta Model Contribution, which measures how much a model improves the aggregate rather than echoing it.

Staking is where NMR enters. A participant attaches NMR to a model, and payout comes from that model's scores scaled by a payout factor. The legacy formula clips payout and burn at plus or minus five percent per round, and the payout factor falls as total stake at risk rises. Numerai is migrating this on chain as Atomic Blockchain Staking.

NMR Token Utility

NMR has one job: it is the asset a data scientist puts at risk on a submission, where positive scores pay out more and negative scores burn part of the stake.

Two properties follow. Burning is permanent, since NMR can be sent to a null address and made unusable by anyone including Numerai. The documentation frames this as the reason to use a token at all: a penalty that destroys value rather than transferring it means no house profits when a participant loses. Supply is capped, and NMR is explicitly not equity, carrying no ownership or voting rights.

What Makes Numeraire Unique?

Numeraire targets a problem specific to machine learning competitions: intentional overfitting. A contest paying out on historical performance rewards models that look good on old data and fail on new data. The whitepaper argues that a burnable stake forces participants to reveal genuine confidence in out of sample results.

How Numeraire Differs from Similar Projects

Bittensor also pays for machine intelligence, but rewards come from protocol emissions rather than a fund trading the output. Ocean Protocol is a market for datasets rather than a competition producing one aggregated signal. Pyth Network and DIA distribute financial data on chain, where Numerai consumes data privately and publishes only scores.

How Numeraire Is Secured

NMR is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, so balances and transfers carry Ethereum's security. Staking and burning are enforced by contract rather than promise, which is why Numerai emphasizes that even it cannot recover burned NMR.

Risks and Considerations

Staking NMR is not passive yield. A model that scores negatively has part of its stake destroyed. Anyone treating a stake as a savings position is misreading the mechanism.

Demand is tied to one company's tournament, so if participation drops or the fund changes direction, the token's primary use goes with it. The payout factor scales down as total stake rises, compressing returns exactly when the tournament grows. The fund is private, so participants stake into a system they cannot fully audit.

Why Numeraire Matters

Numerai is one of the oldest crypto projects still doing what it set out to do, and one of few where the token is load bearing rather than decorative. It answers a real question: how to extract honest confidence signals from anonymous contributors.

Where Can You Buy Numeraire (NMR)?

NMR trades on a range of centralized exchanges and, as an ERC-20 token, on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap. Its contract address is published in the documentation, so check any swap against it rather than by ticker.

Storage Options After Purchase

NMR is a standard ERC-20 token, so any Ethereum wallet holds it, with a hardware wallet for larger balances. Staking settles on Ethereum mainnet, so you need the token in a wallet you control plus ETH for gas. A representation also exists on the Energi network, a different chain.
