Terra Classic is the original Terra blockchain, a Cosmos SDK network that kept operating after its algorithmic stablecoin system collapsed in May 2022. LUNC is its native staking and governance coin, and USTC is the failed stablecoin that still trades on the same chain. It is run by a volunteer community rather than its original company, and its main activities are protocol maintenance, an on-chain tax that burns LUNC, and governance attempts to reduce supply.

Terra was launched in 2019 by Terraform Labs, co-founded by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin. Its defining feature was UST, a stablecoin held near one dollar not by cash reserves but by an arbitrage loop with LUNA: burning one dollar of LUNA minted one UST and vice versa. High yields on the Anchor lending protocol drove UST demand.
In May 2022 that loop broke. UST lost its peg, the mechanism responded by issuing enormous quantities of LUNA, and supply expanded by orders of magnitude within days. The community launched a new chain called Terra with a fresh token and no algorithmic stablecoin, and the original network became Terra Classic. Terraform Labs later entered bankruptcy, and Do Kwon pleaded guilty to fraud charges in 2025.
Terra Classic is a proof of stake chain built on the Cosmos SDK with Tendermint style consensus. Holders delegate LUNC to validators, validators produce blocks, and both share rewards. Governance runs entirely on chain: proposals passing a vote of staked LUNC become policy.
The feature that most distinguishes the chain today is the burn tax. A percentage of each on-chain transfer is destroyed rather than collected, and the rate has been raised and lowered several times by governance since 2022. Because it applies only to on-chain transfers and not to trades settled inside exchanges, the practical burn rate depends on how much activity is on chain.
The recognisable components are the terrad node software and its validator set, on-chain governance and the community pool, the burn tax module, a governance funded developer group known as the Layer 1 Task Force, and the community maintained Station wallet and Finder.
LUNC is staked to secure the chain and earn rewards, pays transaction fees, and carries governance weight in proportion to staked amount. It is also the asset destroyed by the burn tax. There is no longer any mint and burn relationship with a working stablecoin, so LUNC does not absorb volatility as the original design intended.
Terra Classic is one of very few large blockchains that survived a total failure of its core economic mechanism and continued under community control. There is no company and no roadmap owner, so direction is set proposal by proposal.
Terra, the successor chain, carries the same lineage but a different token, no algorithmic stablecoin and a separate development history. Cosmos and Osmosis share the framework but never depended on an algorithmic peg and have funded development. Compared with other chains at its rank, Terra Classic is defined less by what it builds than by an outstanding supply overhang.
Present day usage is limited. LUNC is used for staking, governance, and transfers within Cosmos over Inter-Blockchain Communication. Speculative trading on burn narratives makes up a large share of activity, and there is no significant decentralised finance ecosystem on the chain.
Security comes from delegated proof of stake, where safety depends on honest control of a supermajority of staked LUNC. Because the coin's unit value is very low, the absolute cost of acquiring a large stake is a legitimate question, and software security depends on the community keeping pace with upstream Cosmos releases.
The risks here are unusually direct. Supply is measured in trillions of units and the burn tax removes it slowly, so arithmetic alone makes a return to earlier price levels implausible. USTC remains far from its peg and no repeg mechanism has been shown to work. Development depends on volunteer teams, and governance can be influenced by large stakers including exchanges holding customer coins. Treat burn projections and repeg plans as proposals only.
Terra Classic is the most consequential case study on the failure of algorithmic stablecoins, and it remains observable in real time. It also shows what a blockchain looks like when the founding company is gone: a validator set, an on-chain vote and a community deciding whether to keep the lights on.
LUNC remains listed on a number of large centralised exchanges and trades on decentralised venues in the Cosmos ecosystem, though listings and pairs have changed several times since 2022.
LUNC can be stored in Cosmos compatible wallets including Station, Keplr and Cosmostation, and in hardware wallets supporting Cosmos chains. Note that LUNC and the successor chain's LUNA are different assets on different networks and are not interchangeable.
