Raydium is an automated market maker on Solana and one of the main venues where Solana token trades settle. It began as an AMM that also routed liquidity into a central limit order book, so providers earned from order book flow as well as swaps. It now runs several pool types, a perpetual futures front end and a launch platform, and directs a fixed share of every trading fee into buying RAY.

Raydium launched on February 21, 2021. The founding team is pseudonymous, known by the handles AlphaRay, XRay and GammaRay, with a background in algorithmic trading. That shows in the original decision to route AMM liquidity into Serum's order book; after Serum was abandoned following the FTX collapse, Raydium integrated with the fork OpenBook. Raydium Perps, powered by Orderly Network, launched on January 9, 2025, and LaunchLab followed on April 16, 2025.
Standard AMM v4 pools are legacy constant-product pools with a fixed 0.25 percent swap fee. CPMM pools are the newer constant-product implementation, with 0.01, 0.25 and 1 percent tiers. CLMM pools are concentrated liquidity pools where a provider picks a price range, with 0.01, 0.05, 0.25 and 1 percent tiers.
Fee distribution is where the token economics sit. For CLMM and CPMM pools, 84 percent of the trading fee goes to liquidity providers, 12 percent to RAY buybacks and 4 percent to the treasury; for AMM v4 it is 88 percent and 12 percent with no treasury share. These are shares of the fee, not the trade: on a 0.25 percent fee, the buyback share equals 0.03 percent of the traded amount. Buyback fees are claimed automatically once worth 10 US dollars and used to purchase RAY.
RAY has a maximum supply of 555,000,000, with mint authority disabled so no further supply can be created. The allocation was 34 percent mining reserve, 30 percent partnership and ecosystem, 20 percent team, 8 percent liquidity, 6 percent community and seed, and 2 percent advisors, with team and seed vesting concluded in February 2024. Raydium's documentation states RAY is not required to swap, provide liquidity, create pools or trade perpetuals.
The buyback design is mechanical rather than discretionary: a fixed 12 percent of every trading fee is converted into RAY and held at a public address, so the link between usage and token demand is verifiable on chain. Raydium also sits where Solana tokens are launched, since LaunchLab tokens graduate into its pools, capturing fee flow early in a token's life.
Jupiter is an aggregator that routes across venues, competing for the user while sourcing liquidity from Raydium. Orca and Meteora compete directly as Solana AMMs. Uniswap has a comparable concentrated liquidity model on Ethereum but has kept its fee switch off, so UNI has no equivalent of Raydium's automatic buyback.
Raydium's pool programs are Solana smart contracts, so execution and settlement inherit Solana's consensus. On December 16, 2022, an attacker gained control of the AMM v4 pool owner authority and drained roughly 4.4 million US dollars. Raydium attributed this to compromise of the owner's private key, not a flaw in the pool math. Within four hours the authority was revoked and ownership moved to a hardware wallet.
The team is pseudonymous, and the 2022 incident showed that privileged keys, not just contract logic, are part of the attack surface. Liquidity providers face impermanent loss, amplified in concentrated positions, since a position that drifts outside its range stops earning fees and ends up in one asset. Fee revenue tracks Solana activity, much of it from short-lived speculative launches, and launch platforms can build their own AMMs to keep graduation flow in-house. RAY also has no direct claim on fees; buybacks accumulate tokens at an address rather than distributing to holders.
Raydium is one of the largest sources of onchain liquidity on Solana and a default destination for tokens launched there, with an unusually legible fee split.
