Jito is a Solana infrastructure project built around block building, maximal extractable value (MEV) and liquid staking. It maintains a modified Solana validator client that lets block leaders accept bundles of transactions with tips attached, then routes a share of those tips back to stakers. It also issues JitoSOL, a liquid staking token representing SOL delegated to a curated validator set. JTO is the governance token of the Jito DAO.

Jito Labs was founded in 2021 by Lucas Bruder and Zano Sherwani. Its first widely adopted product was a fork of the Solana validator client adding an MEV auction and tip distribution, which validators took up because it raised their revenue. JTO launched on 7 December 2023 with an airdrop of 100 million tokens to JitoSOL holders, searchers and validators from a 1 billion initial supply. In July 2025 the Jito Foundation introduced the Block Assembly Marketplace (BAM).
Solana blocks are produced by a rotating leader. Searchers submit bundles, ordered groups of transactions that must execute together and in sequence, and attach a tip. A block engine auctions inclusion and passes the highest paying bundles to the leader; on chain programs then collect the tips and distribute them each epoch to the validator and its stakers.
JitoSOL sits on top. Users deposit SOL into a stake pool and receive JitoSOL, whose exchange rate against SOL rises as rewards and tips accrue, so holders can lend or supply liquidity with it while the underlying SOL stays staked. BAM schedules transactions inside trusted execution environments, aiming to keep them private until execution.
JTO is primarily a governance asset. Holders vote on JitoSOL fee parameters, delegation and validator scoring policy, treasury spending and product direction. It is not required to mint, hold or redeem JitoSOL, so demand is not mechanically tied to staking usage. Proposals to route protocol revenue to JTO surface periodically and remain subject to a vote.
Most liquid staking projects operate only at the staking layer. Jito also operates at the client and block production layer, so one organisation influences both how blocks are built and how revenue is shared. That lets JitoSOL pass through MEV tips a plain stake pool would not capture.
Against Ethereum liquid staking protocols the difference is structural: Solana staking has no equivalent withdrawal queue and rewards accrue differently. Against other Solana stake pools, the differentiators are the MEV revenue stream and the validator scoring that drives delegation. Against pure MEV teams, Jito also runs a retail facing staking product.
Assets are secured by Solana's proof of stake consensus and by the stake pool and tip distribution programs, which are open source and audited. Governance runs through on chain voting. BAM adds hardware isolation via trusted execution environments, which shifts part of the trust assumption onto chip vendors rather than removing it.
MEV revenue is cyclical and tracks trading activity, so JitoSOL's yield advantage is variable, not guaranteed. Concentration is a live concern: a large share of Solana stake on one client creates correlated failure and censorship risk. JitoSOL carries smart contract risk and can trade away from redemption value under stress. Governance may concentrate among large holders.
Jito made MEV on Solana explicit rather than hidden and returns part of it to ordinary stakers. It is one of the clearest working examples of blockspace revenue sharing outside Ethereum, and its influence over block production gives its governance weight beyond its own users.
JTO trades on a range of centralised exchanges and on Solana decentralised exchanges and aggregators, quoted against SOL, USDC and other pairs. Availability, pairs and fees vary by venue and jurisdiction, so check listing details and regional restrictions on the venue.
JTO is an SPL token, so any Solana compatible wallet can hold it. Phantom, Solflare and Backpack are common for active use. For larger balances a hardware wallet keeps signing keys offline. Exchange custody is convenient but means the exchange controls the keys.
