Curve is a decentralized exchange built for swaps between assets meant to track the same value, such as different dollar stablecoins or wrapped forms of the same asset. Its StableSwap design concentrates liquidity close to the peg so large trades clear with low slippage, while a separate Cryptoswap design handles volatile pairs. Curve also issues crvUSD, an overcollateralized stablecoin, and runs the Llamalend lending market. CRV is emitted to liquidity providers and can be locked as veCRV.
Official resources:
Curve was created by Michael Egorov, a physicist by training who had previously co-founded NuCypher. He published the StableSwap paper in late 2019 and the exchange went live in January 2020. The CRV token and DAO contracts followed in August 2020 in an unusual launch: an outside party deployed the contracts ahead of the team, and the deployment was then recognized as official. crvUSD shipped in 2023 and Llamalend followed.
The StableSwap invariant behaves like a constant-sum market maker near the balance point and like a constant-product one at the extremes, keeping prices tight while still guaranteeing liquidity under stress. Fees accrue to liquidity providers, with an admin share for the DAO. Emissions run through a gauge system that veCRV holders vote on, and they fall by roughly 15.9% each mining epoch, converging on a total supply near 3.03 billion CRV.
CRV is the reward emitted to liquidity providers and the asset locked for veCRV, for between one week and four years, where veCRV received equals CRV locked multiplied by remaining lock years divided by four. veCRV carries voting power over proposals and gauge weights, boosted rewards on supplied liquidity, and a share of revenue. It is not transferable and decays as the lock nears expiry.
Two contributions stand out. The StableSwap invariant made low-slippage stablecoin trading practical and became the reference design for pegged-asset market makers. Vote-escrow tokenomics, introduced with veCRV in 2020, tied governance power and reward boosts to how long a holder commits capital and has since been reused widely across DeFi.
Uniswap optimizes for general spot trading and its token is mainly governance, with no emissions to liquidity providers. PancakeSwap removed vote-locking in 2025. Curve keeps the full vote-escrow model, so influence over emissions belongs to long-term lockers. That created a market in vote incentives and aggregators such as Convex Finance.
Traders and protocols route large stablecoin swaps through Curve to limit slippage. Liquidity providers earn trading fees plus CRV emissions, boosted if they hold veCRV. Borrowers mint crvUSD against collateral or borrow on Llamalend.
Curve publishes a public audit index covering the DAO contracts, the exchange, crvUSD and lending, with reviewers including Trail of Bits, MixBytes, Quantstamp, ChainSecurity and StateMind, plus a bug bounty. Admin functions on all deployed chains are controlled by the DAO through Aragon voting.
Smart contract and compiler-level risk are both real. In July 2023 several pools were drained after a reentrancy protection bug in specific versions of the Vyper compiler, showing that risk can enter through the language toolchain rather than application logic. Soft liquidation softens a liquidation but does not prevent loss, and Curve's documentation covers the possibility of bad debt in lending markets. Locking CRV is irreversible until expiry. Governance is concentrated among the largest veCRV positions, and in June 2024 large leveraged borrowings by the founder against CRV collateral were liquidated, leaving bad debt behind.
Curve sits at the center of stablecoin liquidity on Ethereum and several other chains, which makes it infrastructure for other protocols rather than only a trading venue. Its invariant and its vote-escrow model are among the most copied ideas in DeFi.
CRV trades on large centralized exchanges including Binance, Coinbase Exchange, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, Upbit, Bitfinex, KuCoin, Gate, Bitget, HTX and MEXC. On-chain it is available through Curve itself on Ethereum and Base, and through Uniswap on several networks.
CRV is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with official deployments on Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and other networks, so any wallet supporting those chains can hold it. Hardware wallets suit larger balances and work with the Curve interface. Locking into veCRV is a commitment: tokens cannot be withdrawn until the lock expires.
