Babylon is a protocol that lets bitcoin holders stake BTC to help secure other blockchains without giving up custody of their coins. BABY is the native gas, governance and staking token of Babylon Genesis, a Cosmos SDK layer 1 that Babylon describes as the control plane for Bitcoin staking security and liquidity. The distinguishing claim is that staked bitcoin never leaves the Bitcoin blockchain: no wrapping, no bridging, no third party custodian. Babylon Genesis launched in April 2025.
Official resources:
Babylon was founded in 2022 by David Tse, a Stanford professor, and Fisher Yu. Babylon Labs lists a16z crypto, Paradigm, Polychain Capital and OKX Ventures among its backers.
A holder locks BTC on the Bitcoin blockchain using Bitcoin's own scripting, in a way only that holder can unlock, then delegates it to a finality provider on the network being secured. Finality providers sign blocks using Extractable One Time Signatures with public randomness. That one time property is what makes slashing possible: signing two conflicting blocks at the same height mathematically reveals the provider's private key, allowing the staked bitcoin to be slashed. Babylon Genesis runs CometBFT consensus and anchors its state to Bitcoin through timestamping.
BABY pays transaction fees on Babylon Genesis, carries on-chain governance votes, and is staked to CometBFT validators alongside staked bitcoin. BABY launched with an initial supply of 10 billion tokens at six decimals and inflates at 8 percent per year, currently split evenly between BTC stakers and BABY stakers. Rewards paid by Bitcoin Secured Networks are auctioned, and winning bids denominated in BABY are burned. The published allocation is 30.5 percent early investors, 18 percent ecosystem, 18 percent research and operations, 15 percent community incentives, 15 percent team and 3.5 percent advisors.
Earlier ways of using BTC in another chain's economy relied on wrapping, a bridge or a custodian, each introducing a party that can fail. Babylon instead uses Bitcoin's native scripting to create a timelocked, slashable position that stays on Bitcoin. That is a different trust model, not a repackaging of an existing one.
EigenLayer applies a comparable restaking idea to Ethereum. Babylon applies it to an asset whose base chain has no smart contracts, which forces the design onto Bitcoin script primitives. Lombard and Lorenzo Protocol build liquid staking and yield products on top of bitcoin staking rather than providing the security primitive. Core and Stacks instead run their own bitcoin adjacent chains.
Bitcoin provides the collateral and, through timestamping, an anchor that makes rewriting Babylon Genesis history expensive. CometBFT provides fast finality backed by staked BABY, and the finality provider layer adds bitcoin backed signatures with an enforced slashing path.
Bitcoin script is unforgiving: there is no upgrade path for coins already locked under a given script, so bugs in the staking or slashing machinery are costly. Slashing is real, and a misbehaving finality provider can cause delegated bitcoin to be slashed, so provider selection matters. BABY inflates at 8 percent per year, diluting holders who do not stake, and early investor plus team allocations are a large share of supply with ongoing vesting.
Babylon is the most technically serious attempt to make bitcoin economically productive without introducing custodians or bridges, and its trust assumptions are narrower than those of wrapped bitcoin. BABY is the asset through which that system is governed and paid for.
BABY is listed on major centralized exchanges, typically in stablecoin pairs, and is tradable on Cosmos ecosystem decentralized exchanges over IBC. Availability varies by venue and region, so confirm you are trading the Babylon Genesis asset rather than a similarly named token.
BABY can be held in Cosmos compatible wallets such as Keplr and Leap, and in hardware wallets that support Cosmos chains. If you stake to a validator, check the unbonding period first, since staked tokens are not immediately transferable. Bitcoin staked through the protocol stays in a script controlled by your own keys.
