What Is ZetaChain (ZETA)?

ZetaChain is a proof of stake layer 1 blockchain designed so that a single smart contract can react to events on other blockchains and directly move assets on them, including chains with no smart contract capability of their own, such as Bitcoin. Its validators are paired with observers that watch external chains and signers that jointly hold one threshold signature key, which behaves as an ordinary address on those chains. Applications built this way are called universal apps. ZETA is the native token for gas, staking and governance.

Who Founded ZetaChain? (History)

ZetaChain's current documentation does not present a founder page, and the project's own materials describe the network rather than the people behind it. Industry profiles commonly name Ankur Nandwani, previously associated with Coinbase and the Basic Attention Token, as a co-founder, with origins dated to 2021. Because those attributions come from secondary sources rather than official documentation, treat them as reported rather than confirmed. What is verifiable is that ZetaChain published a whitepaper on native cross chain smart contracts and launched its mainnet beta on 1 February 2024, initially connecting Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB Chain.

How ZetaChain Works

ZetaChain is built on the Cosmos SDK and uses CometBFT, so validators vote on blocks with weight proportional to bonded ZETA. Observers attached to those validators scan connected chains through their own full nodes, report what they see, and reach consensus on those observations, which then drive ZetaChain's state.

Signers handle the other direction. The validator set collectively holds one key pair through a threshold signature scheme, so no single node can sign alone, and that address can hold assets and initiate transactions on external chains. Foreign assets held there appear inside ZetaChain's EVM as ZRC-20 tokens, and a contract implementing the UniversalContract interface can be invoked from an external chain through a gateway contract and withdraw assets back out.

ZETA Token Utility

ZETA is the gas token of ZetaChain's EVM and the staking asset of the chain. Validators bond ZETA and earn block rewards and fees in proportion to bonded stake, and delegation lets holders take part without running infrastructure. In cross chain message passing the user pays in ZETA, and the protocol converts the right amount into the outbound chain's gas asset through internal liquidity pools. The whitepaper describes a planned progression toward fully delegated proof of stake.

What Makes ZetaChain Unique?

The defining capability is native custody on chains that cannot run contracts. Most interoperability systems require smart contract support at both ends, or they wrap an asset through an intermediary and hand you a derivative claim. ZetaChain's threshold key is an ordinary address from Bitcoin's point of view, so a contract can hold and spend real BTC under programmed rules without wrapping it first, and a universal contract is a single deployment rather than mirrored contracts kept in sync.

How ZetaChain Differs from Similar Projects

Axelar is also a Cosmos based chain whose validators observe external networks and control gateways with threshold signatures, but its emphasis is message passing and canonical multichain token identity, whereas ZetaChain emphasizes contracts on its own chain holding and directing external assets. LayerZero and Wormhole deliver payloads and leave application logic on each end, while THORChain custodies native assets including Bitcoin but is built for swaps rather than general programmability.

How ZetaChain Is Secured

The chain is secured by bonded stake and Byzantine fault tolerant consensus, with safety assuming an honest supermajority of validators. Cross chain reads require observers to independently reach consensus on external events, so one faulty observer cannot inject a false deposit, and writes require a threshold of signers to combine key shares, so no individual node can move custodied assets. Because these roles usually sit in one node, slashing covers cross chain misbehavior too.

Risks and Considerations

The threshold signature address is the central risk. It holds real assets on external chains, and its safety rests on enough validators being honest and their key shares not being compromised. That is stronger than a small multisig, but it concentrates value in one place, and this category has a long history of exploits. The staged transition toward fully delegated proof of stake means decentralization should be judged against the current validator set. The project has also broadened toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, which adds execution risk, and the founding team is not clearly identified in official materials.

Why ZetaChain Matters

Bitcoin holds an enormous share of crypto value and cannot express programmable conditions on its own chain. Systems that let that value be used without handing it to a custodian or wrapping it into a derivative are strategically important, and ZetaChain's threshold custody combined with universal contracts is one of the more direct attempts at it.

If you delegate, review the validator's commission and uptime, since your exposure follows that operator.
