Plasma is a Layer 1 blockchain built specifically for stablecoin payments rather than general-purpose applications. It is fully EVM compatible, so Solidity contracts and standard Ethereum tooling work unchanged, and XPL is the native token used to pay gas and secure the chain through proof of stake. The public mainnet beta launched on 25 September 2025 with chain ID 9745. The team also operates Plasma One, a consumer dollar account and card product built on the network.
Official resources:
Plasma is led by Paul Faecks, identified as chief executive in reporting on the mainnet launch. The project does not publish a detailed team page, so beyond that role the contributor list is not publicly documented. The chain launched with a large set of DeFi integrations already deployed and published a MiCA whitepaper for XPL.
Plasma separates consensus from execution. Consensus runs on PlasmaBFT, described in the documentation as a pipelined implementation of Fast HotStuff, which sequences blocks and provides finality. Execution runs on a client based on Reth, a Rust implementation of the Ethereum execution engine, and the two layers communicate through the Engine API. Because execution is unmodified Reth, opcodes, contracts and call behaviour match Ethereum mainnet. The pipelined design lets blocks be proposed and finalised in quick succession without slot-based finality.
XPL pays transaction fees and is staked by validators who secure the chain and earn protocol rewards. The documentation describes an initial supply of 10 billion XPL at mainnet beta, allocated 40 percent to ecosystem and growth, 25 percent to the team, 25 percent to investors and 10 percent to the public sale. Validator rewards are described as starting at 5 percent annual inflation and stepping down by 0.5 percent per year toward a 3 percent baseline, with base fees burned under EIP-1559 style mechanics.
Most general-purpose chains treat stablecoins as one asset class among many. Plasma inverts that, treating dollar transfer as the primary workload and shaping consensus, fee policy and product design around it. Running both the consumer dollar account product and the settlement chain underneath it is unusual for a Layer 1.
TRON carries very large stablecoin volume but was not designed for it, while Plasma is purpose-built and EVM-native. Stellar is payment-focused but uses its own contract model. Unlike an Ethereum Layer 2, Plasma runs its own validator set rather than inheriting security from Ethereum.
Fee claims should be read carefully. The documentation lists XPL as the only live fee token and describes multi-token fee payment and a protocol paymaster as forthcoming, while Plasma states that zero-fee dollar transfers apply to Plasma routes, with third-party fees still possible.
Security comes from proof of stake. Validators stake XPL to earn the right to confirm transactions, and PlasmaBFT provides Byzantine fault tolerant finality. Execution correctness is inherited from the widely used Reth codebase. Node documentation covers setup, monitoring, upgrades and recovery, and the project publishes a network status page.
The network is still labelled a mainnet beta, and consensus node participation is described as a future phase, which implies validator decentralisation is still maturing. Plasma states that it is a financial technology company, not a regulated financial institution, and that stablecoin balances are not bank deposits. A large share of XPL sits in allocations that unlock over time. Zero-fee messaging is route-specific, and no widely published repository for the core client was found, which limits independent code review.
Stablecoins are one of the clearest product-market fits in crypto, and most of that volume still runs on chains designed for something else. Plasma tests whether a chain optimised end to end for dollar transfer can capture real payment flow.
XPL is listed on a range of centralised exchanges and trades on decentralised exchanges deployed on Plasma itself. Availability and regional access change over time, so check the live market data on this page before trading.
XPL is an EVM-native asset, so any EVM-compatible wallet works once Plasma is added as a custom network using the published chain ID and RPC endpoint. Browser wallets such as MetaMask and Rabby and mobile wallets such as Trust Wallet are documented as compatible. For larger balances, pair a hardware wallet with a browser wallet. Exchange custody is convenient but means you do not control the keys.
