DeepBook is the native central limit order book of the Sui blockchain. Instead of pricing trades with an automated market maker curve, it maintains real bids and asks and matches them onchain, the way an exchange order book does, with settlement happening inside a single Sui transaction.
The structural point is that DeepBook is not an app competing for liquidity with other Sui apps. It is shared infrastructure close to the base layer, so wallets, aggregators, perpetuals venues and lending markets all route into the same book, and every integration deepens the same liquidity rather than fragmenting it.
DEEP is the protocol token. It is used to pay trading fees at a discount, to unlock maker and taker incentives through staking, and to govern the fee parameters of individual pools.
This page describes the DeepBook protocol on Sui. Several unrelated projects use similar names or the same ticker, so verify the coin type before trading or transferring.
Official sources:
DeepBook was incubated by Mysten Labs, the company founded in 2021 by engineers from the Facebook Novi and Diem project who also built Sui, together with the Sui Foundation. It shipped on Sui mainnet on 12 July 2023 as an open source, permissionless order book that any Sui protocol could call.
The first version proved the design but was limited. In 2024 the protocol was rebuilt from scratch as DeepBook V3, launching on 14 October 2024 alongside the DEEP token and introducing the token-based fee model, pool level governance, staking incentives and permissionless pool creation.
Development since then has widened the primitive set rather than replacing it. DeepBook Margin, which brings leverage onto the same shared book, launched on mainnet in January 2026 with isolated lending pools and onchain liquidation. A prediction primitive called Predict, offering binary markets with continuous strikes, has been developed on testnet. Confirm current availability in the documentation, since this part of the stack is still expanding.
Pools hold the book Each trading pair lives in a shared Pool object containing the bid and ask sides. Limit orders rest in the book; market orders sweep it. A single large bid can be filled from multiple resting asks in one transaction.
BalanceManager holds trader funds Accounts placing resting orders deposit into a BalanceManager, a shared object that tracks balances and lets one account trade across many pools. Simple swap entry points bypass this and accept coins directly, which lets routers and aggregators integrate without creating an account object first.
Fees are paid in DEEP or in the input asset Traders can pay fees either in DEEP or in the token they are trading. Paying in DEEP is documented as materially cheaper, which is the core demand mechanism for the token.
Staking sets your fee tier Staking DEEP against a pool unlocks taker discounts and maker rebates. Documented taker rates fall to very low single-digit fractions of a basis point on stable pairs and low single-digit basis points on volatile pairs, with maker rebates scaling with volume contributed.
Governance is per pool Stakers in a pool vote on that pool's fee parameters within protocol-defined bounds, so a stablecoin book and a long-tail book can be tuned differently without a global vote.

Its documented roles are:
The launch allocation was published as roughly 61.6 percent to community and ecosystem growth, 10.9 percent to investors, 10 percent to the initial airdrop, 10 percent to Mysten Labs and 7.5 percent to early contributors, with the remainder releasing gradually over several years. The initial airdrop was distributed through soulbound claim NFTs to early Sui users before the token went live.
Onchain order books are hard because they need cheap, fast state updates, and most chains cannot support one without pushing matching off chain to a sequencer. DeepBook exists because Sui's object model lets orders be managed as shared state with parallel execution, and because fees are low enough that quoting and cancelling is economically viable.
The second unusual property is that liquidity is a public good here. Because DeepBook is base layer infrastructure rather than a competing venue, a new Sui protocol plugs into the existing book instead of bootstrapping its own, and its flow makes the book better for the next integrator.
Compared with constant-product AMMs, DeepBook offers real limit orders, tighter spreads for professional market makers, and no forced impermanent loss for liquidity providers, at the cost of requiring active quoting rather than passive deposits.
Compared with appchain order books such as dYdX, which run their own chain and their own validator set, DeepBook runs inside a general-purpose Layer 1 and shares its security and composability, so any other Sui contract can call it atomically.
Compared with order books that keep matching off chain and settle onchain, DeepBook keeps matching itself onchain, which is slower in absolute latency terms but removes the trusted sequencer.
DeepBook is one of the clearest tests of whether a fully onchain order book can be competitive rather than merely possible. If shared, base layer liquidity works, it changes how new protocols launch: they inherit depth instead of paying to rent it. That makes DeepBook a reasonable proxy for the health of onchain trading on Sui as a whole.
DEEP trades on centralized exchanges and on Sui-based decentralized exchanges, including DeepBook itself. Pairs and availability vary by venue and jurisdiction.
