dYdX is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures that, since version 4, runs on its own blockchain. The dYdX Chain is a Cosmos SDK application secured by CometBFT consensus, where validators run the orderbook and matching engine themselves. DYDX is its Layer 1 token, which the documentation says "serves three key purposes: Staking, Security, and Governance."
Official resources:
dYdX was founded in 2017 by Antonio Juliano, a former Coinbase engineer, and calls itself "the first to offer decentralized margin trading and derivatives." Version 3 ran on a StarkEx Layer 2, and version 4 dropped the rollup model when the dYdX Chain launched as a Cosmos SDK Layer 1 in October 2023. In August 2024 the core company, now dYdX Labs, announced dYdX Unlimited, introducing MegaVault, instant listings and revenue sharing.
The defining decision is where the orderbook lives. Validators are responsible for "storing orders in an in-memory orderbook (i.e. off chain and not committed to consensus)," so placing and cancelling an order costs no block space. They propose blocks "in a weighted-round-robin fashion" by stake, and a block commits once two-thirds by stake weight approve. Only matches and settlements go on-chain.
The documentation lists three roles: staking, where holders run validators or delegate to them; security, since staked DYDX secures the chain; and governance over parameters, treasury spending and upgrades. Revenue sharing ties DYDX to activity: buybacks began in March 2025 at 25% of net protocol fees, and on November 13, 2025 the community approved 75% to the Buyback Program, 5% to Treasury SubDAO, 5% to MegaVault and 15% to the Distribution module.
Most decentralized perpetual venues pick one of two designs: an automated market maker with a pooled counterparty, or a centralized matching engine with on-chain settlement. dYdX built a third, a chain where every validator runs the orderbook in memory, removing the single operator from the matching path while keeping order placement gasless.
Hyperliquid also runs a purpose-built chain with an on-chain orderbook, but on its own consensus stack rather than the Cosmos toolchain. GMX uses pooled liquidity where a shared vault takes the other side of trades, while Aster and ApeX Protocol run perpetuals on existing chains and Aevo pairs options and perpetuals with a rollup. dYdX is a Cosmos appchain with validator-run orderbooks and a vote-set revenue split.
Security is Cosmos proof of stake. Validators bond DYDX, sign blocks and face slashing for double-signing or downtime, and the active set is capped by a governance-adjustable max_validators parameter. The documentation notes an audit by Informal Systems. Because the orderbook sits in validator memory, ordering fairness rests on validator behavior, not cryptographic proof.
Perpetual futures are leveraged and can be liquidated quickly, the risk most users actually meet. MegaVault depositors take on market-making exposure and may face slippage on withdrawal, and instant listings mean thinly researched assets can become tradeable markets. Revenue sharing also ties DYDX to trading volume, which is cyclical and increasingly contested.
dYdX ran one of the largest decentralized derivatives venues on a rollup, then abandoned that stack to build a sovereign chain and decentralize the orderbook. That made it a working reference for what an application-specific chain is for, and routing most protocol revenue into buybacks by vote shows holders exercising real economic control.
DYDX is available on many large centralized exchanges. On-chain it is a Cosmos-native asset that can move through IBC to connected networks, including Osmosis, where it swaps against USDC. When moving DYDX between ecosystems, confirm the correct IBC denomination rather than a legacy Ethereum representation, since the two are not the same asset.
DYDX on the dYdX Chain is a Cosmos SDK asset, so wallets such as Keplr and Leap hold it and both connect to the trading interface. Ledger devices pair with those wallets for cold storage. If you stake, choose a validator deliberately rather than the largest, and account for the unbonding period during which tokens are neither liquid nor earning.
