Comedian is a Solana meme coin named after Maurizio Cattelan's artwork Comedian, a banana duct-taped to a wall. It launched on pump.fun in October 2024, and its mint address carries the "pump" suffix that identifies tokens created there. The project claims no technical utility. Its website calls the token satire, saying meme coin value "is often inflated by internet trends and social media influence rather than intrinsic utility or technical innovation."

Who Founded Comedian? (History)

BAN was created by Michael Bouhanna, then head of digital art and NFTs at Sotheby's, who confirmed authorship on X after the token drew attention. He described launching it "on the Pump.Fun platform as a spontaneous project" and said Sotheby's had no affiliation with it. The launch followed news that an edition was heading to auction, and he faced public accusations of insider trading, which he denied.

The artwork history is often misstated, including on the project's site, which says the 2019 work "sold at Sotheby's for $120,000." The first of three editions actually sold for about that at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2019 through the Perrotin gallery. Sotheby's came later, selling a second edition in New York in November 2024 to Justin Sun.

How Comedian Works

BAN is an ordinary SPL token with six decimals. It has no staking contract, fee mechanism, burn schedule or governance module. It inherits Solana's speed and low fees, and that is the whole story.
