Tesla xStock is a tokenized tracker certificate that follows the value of Tesla, Inc. common stock, issued on public blockchains so it can be traded and used like any other token. It is part of the xStocks range, described by its issuer as "1:1 backed tokenized US equities and ETFs, tradeable 24/7, across chains, by anyone in the world," with each token "backed 1:1 by the underlying asset held in regulated custody." The issuer is Backed Assets (JE) Limited, a Jersey company within the Backed group, and the products are offered under a prospectus filed with Liechtenstein's Financial Market Authority. Holding TSLAX gives economic exposure to the share price and a redemption claim, not share ownership or voting rights.

Tesla xStock is a product, not a standalone project, so its history is the history of its issuer. Backed states on its company page that "in 2021, our co-founders Adam, Roberto, and Yehonatan saw the acceleration and acceptance of stablecoins," referring to Adam Levi, Roberto Klein and Yehonatan Goldman. The company records filing and receiving approval of its prospectus in the EU in the 2021 to 2022 period, with the prospectus filed to the Liechtenstein FMA.
The xStocks line went live on June 30, 2025, launched together with Kraken and Bybit on Solana with an initial set of roughly 60 US equities and ETFs, Tesla among them. Distribution then expanded to additional chains and venues. In December 2025 Kraken's parent, Payward, announced an agreement to acquire Backed Finance AG outright, with the transaction reported as completed in January 2026, bringing xStocks issuance in-house at Kraken.
Backed issues xStocks as "tokenized tracker certificates that track the value of publicly traded equities and ETFs" under a "bankruptcy-remote structure," and states they are "fully collateralized 1:1 by the corresponding underlying asset," with "3rd-party licensed custodians" holding the underlying shares.
The primary market is restricted. Direct issuance and redemption run through the issuer and licensed intermediaries and require qualifying as a "Qualified Investor" with the associated onboarding checks. Most users interact only with the secondary market, buying TSLAX on an exchange or a decentralized venue, where the token circulates freely as a standard on-chain asset.
Because tokens trade continuously while the underlying US listing does not, on-chain prices during closed market hours reflect what buyers and sellers will pay rather than an exchange print. Corporate actions are handled at the token level: Kraken's xStocks documentation states that for a real-world dividend "your same-token balance will increase," describing dividends as auto-reinvested rather than paid out separately.
TSLAX is not a governance or fee token. Its utility is the exposure itself plus what composability adds on top. Holders get price tracking of Tesla stock, a legal claim against the issuer for the value of the underlying, and the ability to hold that exposure in a self-custodied wallet.
Beyond that, the token can move at blockchain speed, settle without a broker, be split into small fractions, be traded outside US market hours, and be supplied to on-chain venues as trading or collateral inventory. That last property is the real differentiator over a brokerage position: the same asset can sit in a liquidity pool or a lending market rather than in a segregated brokerage account.
The combination of a regulated prospectus-based wrapper with permissionless on-chain circulation is uncommon. Many earlier attempts at tokenized equities were either synthetic, tracking a price without holding the share, or fully permissioned, restricting transfers to whitelisted addresses. xStocks holds the underlying with licensed custodians and still lets the token move freely on the secondary market, which is what allows DeFi integration to work at all.
Compared with synthetic equity exposure built from derivatives or oracle-priced contracts, TSLAX is collateralized by actual shares. Compared with tokenized equity programs that keep tokens inside a closed permissioned network, xStocks tokens are ordinary transferable tokens on public chains. Compared with holding TSLA through a broker, the tradeoffs are explicit: no shareholder rights, no direct relationship with the company, an issuer credit dependency, and a different tax and regulatory treatment, in exchange for 24/7 transferability and composability. Other issuers of tokenized Tesla exposure make different structural choices, so the wrapper matters as much as the ticker.
Security here is mostly legal rather than cryptographic. The token contracts are standard on each chain, so on-chain security follows the host network. The protection that matters is the 1:1 collateral held by third-party licensed custodians, the bankruptcy-remote issuing structure, and the redemption right documented in the prospectus and final terms available through the issuer's legal documentation portal. The issuer also publishes reserve information for its tokenized products. Users hold the token in their own wallets, so ordinary key management and phishing risks apply as with any token.
This is a debt-style claim on an issuer, not stock ownership, and holders receive no shareholder or voting rights. Issuer and custodian risk are real even under a bankruptcy-remote structure. Availability is restricted: the products are not offered to US persons, and the issuer's materials also exclude UK, Canadian and Australian residents along with sanctioned jurisdictions. Secondary market liquidity can be thin, and prices can diverge from the reference share price when US markets are closed or during volatility. Redemption at par is not something a typical retail secondary-market holder can perform directly, since primary market access requires qualification. Regulatory treatment of tokenized equities is still developing and could change distribution or eligibility. Finally, the underlying carries full single-stock equity risk.
Tokenized equities are one of the clearest tests of whether real-world assets can live usefully on public blockchains, and Tesla is among the most widely traded single names in the world. TSLAX is a concrete example of a regulated issuer putting a mainstream equity into a freely transferable token and letting DeFi build on top of it. Kraken's acquisition of the issuer signals that large exchanges see this format as infrastructure rather than an experiment.
TSLAX is available on centralized exchanges that distribute xStocks, including Kraken and Bybit among others, subject to jurisdictional eligibility. On-chain it trades on decentralized exchanges on Solana and other supported networks. Because the same product exists on several chains with different addresses, confirm the correct contract for the network you are using against a block explorer before trading, and check whether your jurisdiction is eligible before opening an account.
TSLAX can be held in any wallet that supports the chain you bought it on, meaning Solana wallets for the SPL version and EVM wallets for the Ethereum, BNB Chain, Arbitrum and Mantle versions. A hardware wallet is appropriate for larger positions. Note that self-custody does not give you a direct redemption path unless you qualify for the primary market, so most holders exit through a secondary venue. Keeping the token on a distribution exchange is simpler but adds custody risk on top of the existing issuer risk.
