Streamr is a decentralized publish and subscribe network for real-time data. Instead of pushing live data through a central broker such as a hosted message queue, applications publish messages into named streams and authorized subscribers receive them over a peer-to-peer overlay run by independent node operators. DATA is the ERC-20 token that pays for and governs that network.
The problem Streamr targets is that real-time data transport is normally centralized, metered, and controlled by whoever runs the server. Streamr replaces the broker with an open network in which the people relaying traffic are paid in DATA and penalized if they stop doing the work.
Official sources:
Streamr was founded by a Finnish team led by Henri Pihkala, who has served as chief executive and chief scientist, alongside co-founders including Nikke Nylund. The project raised funds through a token sale in 2017 and spent the following years moving from a hosted broker toward a genuinely peer-to-peer transport layer.
The final milestone of that roadmap, referred to as Streamr 1.0, shipped the full token economics in 2024 and placed staking and incentive contracts on Polygon. Governance runs through a community council process, and the project publishes quarterly transparency reports covering funding, contributors, and network activity, which makes its history easier to verify than that of most projects its age.
Streamr is best understood as three layers stacked on each other.
The transport layer A peer-to-peer network of nodes forms per-stream overlay topologies. Publishers push messages into a stream and the overlay propagates them to subscribers. Nodes are the access point for applications, and the same software is used whether you publish sensor readings or subscribe to a market feed.
The incentive layer Because nodes can churn, free ride, or fail, the network needs a reason for operators to stay online. Sponsors fund a stream by paying DATA into a Sponsorship contract. Operators stake DATA on that Sponsorship to commit their nodes to relaying the stream, and earn from the pool while they do the work.
The accountability layer Nodes inspect one another. An operator suspected of not relaying can be flagged, other operators vote, and a kicked operator loses a slashing fraction of its stake, documented at one percent. Flaggers and correct voters are compensated, which is what makes inspection worth doing at all.
The main pieces are the Streamr Network itself; the Streamr SDK and command line tools applications use to publish and subscribe; the Streamr Hub, where streams and sponsorships are created and managed; the Sponsorship and Operator smart contracts that hold stake and distribute earnings; and the stream registry that records permissions. Operators, delegators, and sponsors are the three economic roles, and one participant can occupy more than one.
DATA has four documented jobs. It pays the sponsor's bill, since sponsoring a stream means locking DATA that operators earn over time. It is the security bond, because operators must stake DATA to join a Sponsorship and can be slashed. It is a delegation asset, since delegators can back an operator and share in the resulting profits after the operator takes an agreed cut. And it carries governance weight over network and economic decisions.
Earnings are split by contract. A protocol fee fraction, documented at five percent, goes to the protocol treasury; the operator takes its configured cut; the remainder is shared among delegators in proportion to stake. The token exists on Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Gnosis Chain, but staking and delegation happen on Polygon.
Streamr treats real-time transport, not storage or computation, as the scarce resource worth decentralizing. Most data-focused crypto projects index historical data, store files, or sell datasets. Streamr's product is the live pipe itself, with delivery commitments enforced by stake rather than by a service level agreement.
The second distinguishing choice is the sponsorship model. Rather than charging subscribers per message, whoever wants a stream to stay alive pays into a pool, and anyone permitted can subscribe. That inverts the usual metered API relationship and makes genuinely public real-time feeds economically possible.
Compared with decentralized storage networks, Streamr is not competing on durability; messages move through the network rather than resting in it. Compared with indexing protocols that serve queries over historical blockchain state, Streamr is concerned with the moment data is produced. Compared with device-focused networks that pay people to deploy hardware, Streamr pays for bandwidth and uptime rather than radio coverage, which makes its operator set much cheaper to join but more sensitive to token economics.
Documented and commonly cited uses include distributing live market and price feeds, moving telemetry from vehicles, sensors, and industrial equipment, powering real-time features inside decentralized applications, and carrying messaging traffic for peer-to-peer software. The team has also built consumer-facing software on the transport layer, including a peer-to-peer video and audio conferencing tool announced as Streamr Beta.
Stream security rests on cryptographic message signing and permissioned access control recorded in the stream registry, so subscribers can verify a message really came from the claimed publisher and publishers can restrict who reads a private stream. Network reliability rests on the staking and inspection system above, where economic loss rather than reputation is the deterrent. The economic contracts live on Polygon, so their safety also depends on that chain and on the correctness of the open-source Operator and Sponsorship contracts.
The most important consideration for anyone researching Streamr is that the project has published candid transparency reports describing severe funding pressure. Token-inflation-based funding was halted in early 2026, salaries were effectively suspended shortly afterward, the active contributor group shrank to a handful of people, and the council has described the project as operating in a lean, largely volunteer mode while it searches for product-market fit.
Several major centralized exchanges delisted DATA during 2026, which concentrated trading on decentralized venues and thinned liquidity, and the count of active staked node operators fell alongside that. There is also ordinary smart contract risk, a dependency on Polygon for the incentive layer, and the structural risk that a network built on paid relaying stalls if the token cannot fund enough operators. None of this makes the technology wrong, but a reader should verify the project's current state rather than assume continuity.
Streamr is one of the longer-running attempts to answer a specific and unglamorous question: who pays for the pipes when nobody owns them? Its sponsorship and slashing design is a clean, well-documented model for buying uptime with stake, and that pattern has influenced how other bandwidth and infrastructure networks think about incentives. The engineering work is open source and remains useful reference material regardless of the token's trajectory.
DATA trades primarily on decentralized exchanges on the chains where it is deployed, most actively on Polygon and Ethereum. Availability on centralized exchanges has narrowed considerably following delistings, so check current listings for your jurisdiction rather than assuming a venue still supports the pair.
Centralized coverage for DATA has become limited and should be verified directly at the venue before you plan around it. Where listings exist, pairs are typically quoted against USDT. Because several large exchanges removed the pair, older listing information should not be treated as current.
DATA is a standard ERC-20 token on Ethereum with bridged deployments on Polygon, BNB Chain, and Gnosis Chain, and can be held in any wallet supporting those networks, including hardware wallets paired with compatible software. Operators and delegators need their tokens on Polygon to interact with the Sponsorship and Operator contracts.
Confirm the network and contract address before transferring. The Ethereum contract is 0x8f693ca8d21b157107184d29d398a8d082b38b76 and the Polygon contract is 0x3a9a81d576d83ff21f26f325066054540720fc34.
