Lombard is a protocol that puts Bitcoin to work in decentralized finance. Its flagship product is LBTC, a Bitcoin-backed token that is issued one to one against BTC held in a consortium-controlled reserve and that can be used across DeFi protocols on multiple chains while the underlying Bitcoin earns yield.

A relayer, using Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, then triggers the mint of the corresponding LBTC on the destination network.
The Security Consortium is the heart of the design. Rather than a single custodian holding keys, a group of independent digital asset institutions jointly controls the reserve, and moving funds requires a threshold of those signers to agree. The documentation describes a consortium in the range of a dozen or more member institutions. Signing keys are held and used inside CubeSigner, a hardware-backed key management system built by the Cubist team, so that keys are never exposed in software even at the moment of signing.
Yield originally came from staking the reserve BTC through Babylon, with rewards paid in various tokens, sold on liquid markets, converted back to BTC, and added to the reserve so that LBTC accrues value against BTC. Redemption inherits an unstaking delay from that process, historically around seven days, which is why LBTC can trade at a small premium or discount to BTC on secondary markets even though it can always be redeemed at the full rate through the protocol. Yield sourcing has broadened over time as Lombard has added products, so the current documentation is the correct reference for how a given asset earns.

The consortium model is the main differentiator. Custodial wrapped Bitcoin concentrates trust in one company, and fully trustless bridges have historically struggled with either security or capital efficiency. Lombard's design distributes custody across independent institutions with threshold signing and hardware-backed key isolation, which is a middle path: not trustless, but far harder to compromise or coerce than a single custodian.
Compared with WBTC and other custodial wrapped Bitcoin, LBTC adds native yield and replaces a single custodian with a threshold consortium. That is a meaningfully different trust profile, though both remain custodial in the sense that a group of identified parties controls the underlying BTC.
Compared with Ethereum liquid staking tokens such as those from Lido or Rocket Pool, the structural difference is that Bitcoin has no native staking. An ETH liquid staking token is backed by a protocol-level validator deposit; a Bitcoin yield token has to source its return from outside Bitcoin's own consensus, which introduces external protocol dependencies that ETH staking does not have.
Reserve security depends on the threshold structure of the Security Consortium. No single member can move funds, so compromising the reserve requires compromising a threshold of independent institutions simultaneously. CubeSigner strengthens this by keeping private keys inside hardware even during signing, which removes the most common class of key extraction attack.
The honest summary is that Lombard is a federated system with strong operational controls, not a trustless one. Its security is real, and it is a different kind of security from Bitcoin's own.
Bitcoin holds an enormous share of crypto value and contributes almost none of it to on-chain activity. Whichever design eventually makes Bitcoin productive at scale will be economically significant, and Lombard represents one of the more institutionally serious attempts: distributed custody with hardware key isolation, real integrations into major lending markets, and distribution partnerships that put the product in front of ordinary holders rather than only DeFi specialists.
