What Is Flow (FLOW)?

Flow is a layer 1 blockchain built for consumer applications and the digital assets inside them, such as collectibles, game items and tickets. Rather than sharding, it splits transaction processing across specialized node roles, so verification stays cheap while execution scales. It runs Cadence, a resource oriented contract language of its own, alongside Flow EVM, which executes unmodified Solidity. FLOW pays fees, secures the network through staking, and is the reserve that gives an account storage capacity.

Who Founded Flow? (History)

Flow came out of Dapper Labs, the studio spun out of Axiom Zen that built CryptoKitties in 2017 and helped establish ERC-721. Its founders are commonly given as Roham Gharegozlou, Dieter Shirley and Mikhael Naayem, with Shirley described as Flow's chief architect and a co-creator of ERC-721. CryptoKitties congested Ethereum badly enough that the team concluded consumer scale demanded its own base layer. Flow was announced in 2019 and launched its mainnet in 2020, and the Flow Foundation was established in 2024 as a non profit separate from Dapper Labs.

How Flow Works

In most blockchains one validator collects, orders, executes and verifies. Flow divides those jobs: collection nodes gather transactions, consensus nodes order blocks, execution nodes compute, verification nodes recheck results in parallel, and access nodes serve data. Because only execution needs powerful hardware, throughput can rise without raising the cost of joining consensus.

Fees have three parts: a fixed inclusion fee of 0.0001 FLOW, an execution fee metered in compute units, and a surge factor during congestion. Storage works as a reserve rather than rent, with an account's balance setting capacity at a documented 1 FLOW per 100 MB.

Key Ecosystem Components

• Cadence, where assets are first class resources that cannot be silently copied or lost
• Flow EVM, an EVM equivalent environment supporting standard Ethereum tooling and JSON-RPC
• The VM bridge, which moves assets between the Cadence and EVM sides
• Protocol level account abstraction, with separate payer and authorizer roles for gasless transactions and passkey signing

FLOW Token Utility

FLOW pays fees in both environments and is staked across all five node roles, each with its own minimum. Holders who do not run infrastructure can delegate, and Flow documents delegators receiving 92 percent of the calculated reward against 8 percent for the operator, paid each roughly weekly epoch from fees and newly minted tokens.

What Makes Flow Unique?

Other designs shard state, which fragments composability, or move execution to a rollup, which delays settlement. Flow keeps one shared state and divides the pipeline by function instead, so verification stays light while execution scales and applications remain atomically composable, and it runs Cadence and full EVM equivalence on one chain with a native bridge between them.

How Flow Differs from Similar Projects

Against general purpose layer 1s such as Avalanche or NEAR, Flow is deliberately narrower: its language, account model and fee design assume users who hold no token before their first transaction. Against gaming networks such as Immutable or Ronin, which are Ethereum layer 2s or sidechains, Flow is an independent layer 1 with its own validator set and finality.

How Flow Is Secured

Flow uses proof of stake with Byzantine fault tolerant consensus in the HotStuff family and reports median finality under ten seconds. Role separation reinforces this: execution nodes publish results and verification nodes recheck that work in parallel, so a dishonest result can be challenged rather than silently accepted. Cadence adds a language level defense, since resources cannot be duplicated or discarded by accident.

Risks and Considerations

Activity is tied to the consumer collectible and gaming cycle, which has been volatile, and much usage has historically come from a small number of Dapper Labs applications. The Cadence 1.0 migration was a breaking change requiring contract owners to rewrite code, a recurring cost of a bespoke language with a smaller developer pool than Solidity's. Validator participation opened gradually rather than being permissionless, so decentralization should be judged against the current node set.

Why Flow Matters

Flow is one of the few networks that started from a concrete consumer failure, the congestion CryptoKitties caused on Ethereum, and redesigned the base layer around it rather than around traders. Separating consensus from execution, and pairing a purpose built language with EVM equivalence, avoids both sharding and rollup fragmentation.

FLOW is listed on many large centralized exchanges against major fiat currencies and stablecoins, and trades on decentralized venues in the Flow ecosystem. Availability varies by venue and jurisdiction, so check network support and confirm the token contract before swapping.

Storage Options After Purchase

FLOW is held in Cadence side wallets such as Flow Wallet, and in standard Ethereum wallets when using Flow EVM by adding the network's RPC details. Hardware wallets with Flow support keep keys offline and are the stronger option for long term holdings. Keep the storage reserve in mind, since an account short of FLOW can have transactions fail.
