Venom is a sharded, non-EVM layer 1 blockchain built on the Threaded Virtual Machine (TVM) lineage, the same asynchronous, actor-model design family used by TON and Everscale. Instead of one global execution queue, Venom splits state into a masterchain, workchains, and shardchains that can split and merge automatically as load changes, and smart contracts talk to each other by passing asynchronous messages rather than by direct synchronous calls.
VENOM is the network's native token. It pays transaction fees, is staked by validators and delegators to secure consensus, and is used in network governance.
The most important current fact about Venom is that it is mid-migration. A governance proposal identified as VIP-003 authorized a move to a new mainnet in 2026, and holders are expected to swap their balances one-for-one through an official migration portal while the old network remains available for a limited period.

Venom's public history begins in 2022, when it was announced as a blockchain foundation registered in Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the financial free zone in the United Arab Emirates, and was widely reported as the first crypto foundation to receive an ADGM license. The technology is closely related to Everscale, which shares the same TVM and asynchronous architecture, and Venom's early funding story involved a separately announced venture fund created with Iceberg Capital.
That founding structure did not persist. ADGM's Registration Authority published a notice stating that Venom Foundation ADGM, registration number 000008382, voluntarily cancelled its commercial license in February 2024 and appointed a liquidator in March 2024, and that the entity is no longer conducting activities in ADGM. The notice explicitly says references to Venom Foundation in social media are not references to Venom Foundation ADGM. Treat the frequently repeated "ADGM-licensed" line as a historical claim rather than a current regulatory status, and verify which legal entity operates the network today.
Mainnet launched in 2023. In 2026 the project put the network upgrade to a token-holder vote as VIP-003 and began migrating to a new mainnet with a clean state.
Masterchain, workchains, and shardchains The masterchain coordinates the system, holding network configuration, the validator set, stake and election data, and the latest block hashes of each shardchain. Workchains are specialized layer 1 chains secured by the same global validator set; the first of them, Basechain, is where general smart contracts run at lower cost than the masterchain.
Dynamic sharding Shardchains are independent processing units with their own memory space. When a shard becomes congested the protocol splits it in two, and when shards are underused they merge back. Each shard carries a binary address prefix, so routing is deterministic rather than negotiated.
Asynchronous smart contracts Contracts follow the actor model: each account is an actor with its own state, and interaction happens by message passing. Contracts are written in T-Sol, a Solidity-derived language, and built with tooling such as the Locklift framework. This is a different programming model from EVM chains, and it is the main reason Ethereum contracts cannot simply be redeployed on Venom.
Proof-of-Stake with BFT finality Validators are chosen by a stake-weighted election with configured minimum and maximum validator counts and stake sizes. Blocks require more than two thirds of validator weight to progress through approval and pre-commit, giving deterministic finality rather than probabilistic settlement. Validators that miss turns or produce invalid blocks can be slashed, and smaller holders can participate through delegated staking pools.

Project documentation describes a maximum supply of 7.2 billion VENOM with a long unlock schedule, and the migration material states that supply and vesting are unchanged by the move to the new mainnet, with the swap performed at a one-to-one ratio.
There is also a wrapped ERC-20 representation on Ethereum at 0x46f84dc6564cdd93922f7bfb88b03d35308d87c9. A direct contract read returns the name "Wrapped VENOM" and symbol "WVENOM" with 9 decimals. This is a bridged wrapper for Ethereum liquidity, not the native asset that secures Venom consensus, and the two should not be confused when depositing or withdrawing.
Venom's technical bet is that dynamic sharding plus asynchronous execution scales better than a single global state machine. Because shards split under load and merge when idle, capacity is supposed to track demand rather than being fixed at design time, and because workchains can define their own virtual machine and transaction structure, the architecture leaves room for specialized chains under one validator set.
Its positioning is also unusual: rather than chasing retail DeFi, Venom's published material targets regulated and institutional use cases such as central bank digital currencies, fiat-backed stablecoins, asset tokenization, trade finance, and proof of reserves.
Against TON and Everscale, its closest architectural relatives, Venom shares the TVM lineage, asynchronous messaging, and sharding model, so the differences are in governance, ecosystem, and the entities behind each network rather than in core design.
Against EVM chains such as Ethereum, BNB Chain, or Arbitrum, Venom is not source compatible. T-Sol looks like Solidity but the asynchronous execution model changes how contracts must be written, and existing audits, libraries, and developer habits do not transfer cleanly.
Against Cosmos or Polkadot, which achieve scale by letting sovereign chains interoperate, Venom keeps one validator set and shards underneath it, so applications inherit shared security rather than bootstrapping their own.
Security comes from stake-weighted validator election plus a Byzantine fault-tolerant voting process that needs more than two thirds of validator weight at each step, which makes committed blocks final rather than merely probable. The masterchain records the validator set, stakes, and election rounds, and slashing penalizes missed or invalid block production.
The caveats are those of any young sharded network: real validator decentralization matters more than the theoretical model, cross-shard and cross-chain messaging expands the surface area for bugs, and a network that has just migrated to a clean-state mainnet has less battle-tested running time than its architecture diagrams suggest.
Venom is one of the more serious attempts to take the TON-family asynchronous architecture and aim it at regulated finance rather than consumer speculation. It is also a useful case study in verifying claims: the network is real and running, the sharding design is substantive, and yet the single most repeated fact about it, its ADGM licensing, is no longer accurate.
