THORChain is a Layer 1 blockchain that works as a cross chain automated market maker, letting a user swap native assets on one chain for native assets on another in a single step. Sending Bitcoin and receiving Ethereum is the canonical example, done without wrapped tokens and without a custodian. RUNE is the native token, present in every pool, every bond and every settlement.

THORChain has no named founder and no formal company. It emerged from a Binance Dexathon hackathon in the first half of 2018, with a first whitepaper published that July, and has been developed since by pseudonymous contributors. Multichain chaosnet in April 2021 first swapped assets across separate blockchains, and two exploits in July 2021 forced a security rework. In January 2025 the protocol suspended its ThorFi lending and savings products after they accumulated liabilities it could not service, converting roughly 200 million dollars of that debt into TCY.
Every supported asset is paired against RUNE, so a swap routes through two hops: the inbound asset becomes RUNE, then RUNE becomes the outbound asset. Custody is handled by vaults, one per connected chain, controlled by the validator set through a threshold signature scheme in which no node holds a complete private key. Each node also runs full nodes for the chains it observes, so the network reaches its own consensus rather than trusting an oracle.
RUNE is the settlement asset in every pool, the bond a validator locks to join the active set, the liquidity pairing asset, and the governance asset. The documentation puts the current bond above 300,000 RUNE, slashable if a validator attempts theft. A maximum of 500 million RUNE was created at genesis and all vesting has completed. Fees split 5 percent burned, 5 percent developer fund, 5 percent marketing, 10 percent to TCY holders, and 75 percent to nodes and liquidity providers.
The economic security model is the most distinctive part. THORChain targets a ratio in which bonded RUNE is roughly twice the value of non RUNE assets in pools, so an attacker able to steal pooled assets forfeits a bond worth more than the theft. Swaps also settle in native assets, removing the wrapped asset trust assumption.
Uniswap is a same chain automated market maker: deeper and simpler, but unable to move assets between chains. Osmosis is the closest cousin, a Cosmos SDK chain running an AMM, but it operates over IBC with representations of external assets. Stargate Finance and deBridge move value across chains through messaging, solving transfer rather than running a market. Chainflip is the most direct competitor.
Validator bonds create economic cost for misbehavior, and slashing enforces it. Threshold signatures mean vaults need a supermajority to move funds, and node churn rotates the validator set, retiring the oldest, slowest and lowest bonded nodes. Mimir governance separates operational parameters from economic ones, which need roughly two thirds consensus. The counterweight is the record: two 2021 exploits drained funds, and ThorFi needed a restructuring.
Cross chain movement is one of the few genuinely unsolved problems in crypto infrastructure, and most attempts settle for wrapping assets or trusting a bridge. THORChain is the largest system that moves native assets between chains without either compromise.
RUNE is listed on many centralized exchanges and can also be acquired natively through THORChain's own swap interfaces and integrated wallets. Earlier Ethereum and BNB Beacon Chain versions were deprecated after the native chain launched, and only native RUNE works for bonding, pooling or governance, so confirm what a venue delivers.
Native RUNE lives on a THORChain address, and several self custody wallets support the chain directly alongside swap and liquidity interfaces. Hardware wallets that support THORChain suit balances you intend to keep. Verify interface URLs carefully, since swap front ends are a frequent phishing target.
