Bone ShibaSwap, ticker BONE, is the governance and staking token of the Shiba Inu ecosystem and the gas currency of Shibarium, that ecosystem's Ethereum Layer 2 network. It began in July 2021 as the farming reward token of ShibaSwap, the ecosystem's decentralized exchange, and was later given a second and more consequential job: paying transaction fees on Shibarium and backing that network's proof-of-stake validator set.
The distinction matters when reading about BONE. Most of what people call "Shiba Inu" refers to SHIB, the ecosystem's original memecoin. BONE is the working token underneath it, and its demand is tied to Shibarium usage and governance rather than to meme momentum.

Read directly from Ethereum mainnet on 11 September 2026, the contract at 0x9813037ee2218799597d83D4a5B6F3b6778218d9 returns the on-chain name BONE SHIBASWAP, the symbol BONE, and 18 decimals.
Shiba Inu was launched in 2020 by an anonymous person or group using the name Ryoshi, who stepped away from the project in 2022 and deleted their public writing. Since then the ecosystem has been led publicly by the pseudonymous developer Shytoshi Kusama and a distributed contributor team, with no traditional named founding company.
BONE arrived with ShibaSwap in July 2021. The ShibaSwap emission contract on Ethereum records a start block of 12,771,232 and a bonus-period end block of 12,871,488, which places the launch in early July 2021 and the boosted-reward window in the weeks immediately after. Shibarium, where BONE became the gas token, launched in August 2023. Because the project has no incorporated founder of record, treat ecosystem announcements as coming from a pseudonymous team rather than from an accountable legal entity.
BONE operates across three layers that are worth separating.
Issuance and the supply ceiling The BONE token contract is a SushiSwap-style token with an owner-gated mint function and Compound-style vote delegation. It has no cap or maxSupply function of its own, so the widely quoted 250 million ceiling is not written into the token itself. The token's owner is the ShibaSwap TopDog farming contract at 0x94235659cf8b805b2c658f9ea2d6d6ddbb17c8d7, a MasterChef-style emitter. Read live on 11 September 2026, that contract returns a BONE-per-block emission rate of zero, total allocation points of zero, and an owner of the zero address, meaning its ownership has been renounced. Nothing can reset the emission rate, and nothing else holds the token's mint permission. In practice, issuance is finished.
Shibarium gas Shibarium is an Ethereum Layer 2 built on the Polygon-style architecture of a Heimdall validator layer and a Bor block-producer layer. Its chain ID is 109, confirmed live against the public RPC endpoint on 11 September 2026, and its native currency symbol is BONE. Every transaction, contract deployment, and dApp interaction on Shibarium consumes BONE.
Governance BONE carries vote delegation in the token contract itself, and the Shib DAO structure uses it as the primary governance token across the ecosystem's Doggy DAOs.

BONE is used for:
Historically BONE was also the reward emitted to ShibaSwap liquidity providers. That emission path is now inert.
Few meme-origin communities produced a working general-purpose chain, and fewer still promoted a farming token into the gas asset of that chain. BONE's distinguishing feature is that its demand is tied to something measurable, namely transactions on Shibarium, rather than to sentiment about a mascot. The second is a supply story that can be checked rather than trusted, since the emission contract is ownerless and set to zero.
Against the other tokens in its own ecosystem, BONE is the utility and governance layer while SHIB is the cultural and liquidity layer, LEASH is a small-supply legacy token, and TREAT is a rewards token. They are not substitutes for one another.
Against other Layer 2 gas assets, Shibarium differs from rollup-first designs in that it uses a validator and block-producer split with Ethereum checkpointing rather than publishing full transaction data to Ethereum for fraud or validity proving. That lowers cost and changes the security assumptions, which is covered below.
At the token level, the contract is small, long-deployed, and simple, and its only privileged function is a mint gated to an owner that is itself an ownerless contract with a zero emission rate.
At the network level, Shibarium relies on a validator set that stakes to participate, with checkpointing back to Ethereum and Plasma-derived contracts protecting the bridge. Shibarium safety therefore depends on validator honesty and on the correctness of the bridge contracts, not on Ethereum re-executing every Shibarium transaction.
At the user level, verify contract addresses against official documentation, and confirm whether you are dealing with the Ethereum representation or the Shibarium-native one, because the two are not interchangeable without the bridge.
BONE is one of the clearer examples of a meme-origin community building infrastructure that outlived the meme. Whatever one thinks of the branding, Shibarium is a functioning EVM network with its own explorer, bridges, testnet, and developer tooling, and BONE is the asset that pays for it.
BONE trades on centralized exchanges as an Ethereum ERC-20 token, and on decentralized venues including ShibaSwap on both Ethereum and Shibarium. Availability, pairs, and deposit networks vary by jurisdiction and by platform, so confirm which network an exchange uses before withdrawing.
BONE is commonly available on:
Pairs are typically quoted against USDT or ETH where supported.
After purchase, BONE can be held:
Always confirm the network and the contract address before depositing or withdrawing, since the Ethereum and Shibarium representations are distinct.
