What Is 0x Protocol (ZRX)?

0x Protocol is decentralized exchange infrastructure on Ethereum and other EVM chains. Rather than running a venue, it supplies the contracts and order formats other applications use to settle token trades, calling itself "the trusted open source settlement layer for the permissionless global exchange of value." Orders are signed off chain and settled on chain, so custody stays with the trader until a fill. ZRX is the governance token, an ERC-20 capped at one billion.

Who Founded 0x Protocol? (History)

0x was founded in 2016 by Will Warren and Amir Bandeali, consistently credited as co-founders in public records and in the project's corporate history as ZeroEx, Inc. Its whitepaper repository on GitHub was created on February 2, 2017, and a public ZRX token sale followed that August.

Versions 2 and 3 added batch matching, bridge proxies and stake-based liquidity incentives. Version 4 rebuilt the system around a delegate-call proxy and added RFQ and NFT orders, while the commercial side moved toward selling routing APIs.

How 0x Protocol Works

The core of version 4 is the ZeroEx contract, known as the Exchange Proxy, which the documentation says "implements a delegate-call proxy pattern to create a system of composable smart contracts." Features hold user allowances and are permissioned by the 0x Governor, while trustless Transformers operate on funds in a sandboxed Flash Wallet.

Limit orders encode a trade at a fixed price, while RFQ orders are a leaner variant for a maker matched with a specific taker. Current API flow runs through 0x Settler, newer contracts using Permit2 "to perform swaps without any passive allowances to the contract." Integrators are told never to hardcode a Settler address and to query its onchain registry instead.

• Fee accrual: the documentation states that "as of September 29, 2021, protocol fees have been removed for all order types in both Exchange V4 and V3 in accordance with ZEIP-91," so staking has no fee stream feeding it.

Treat ZRX as a governance and treasury claim, not a cash-flow instrument, unless a new fee model is adopted.

What Makes 0x Protocol Unique?

0x was among the first designs to separate order creation from settlement: makers sign orders off chain, so quoting and cancelling cost nothing, while settlement stays non-custodial. The composable proxy lets features be replaced or emergency-disabled without redeploying.

How 0x Protocol Differs from Similar Projects

Uniswap (UNI) is a liquidity venue with its own pools. 0x holds no liquidity and instead routes to and settles against other venues, including market makers quoting RFQ. CoW Protocol (COW) attacks the same problem through batch auctions and solver competition, a more fundamental change to execution.

How 0x Protocol Is Secured

Trusted components are permissioned by an onchain Governor contract, while untrusted extensions are isolated in the sandboxed Flash Wallet rather than touching user allowances. Audits, a bug bounty and an emergency page are published.

Risks and Considerations

• ZRX has no protocol fee accrual today, so value accrual depends on governance decisions not yet made.
• Trusted Features hold user allowances and are upgradeable by the Governor, a deliberate choice but a real trust assumption.
• Integrations that hardcode a Settler address can break or hit a paused or counterfeit contract.
• The API business and the protocol are distinct, so API growth need not reach the token.

Why 0x Protocol Matters

Much of the vocabulary the sector takes for granted, including signed off-chain orders, RFQ quoting and settlement layers separated from liquidity, was shaped by 0x's design. It is also a case study in how hard it is to tie token value to infrastructure usage, since the protocol removed its fee rather than taxing the flow it routes.

Where Can You Buy 0x Protocol (ZRX)?

ZRX is a long-listed ERC-20 available on major centralized exchanges, including Coinbase and Kraken, which both maintain ZRX market pages. It also trades on Ethereum decentralized exchanges and through aggregators, some built on 0x itself.

Storage Options After Purchase

ZRX is a standard ERC-20 supported by essentially every Ethereum wallet, including MetaMask and Rabby. Ledger and Trezor suit long-term positions and holders who intend to vote, since governance signing uses normal EVM wallet flows. If you plan to stake as a market maker, review the current parameters first, given that protocol fees are zero.
