Livepeer is an open network that pays independent GPU operators to do video work: transcoding live and on demand streams into the formats viewers need, and running AI inference on video. Applications send jobs, operators run them on their own hardware, and the protocol decides who gets the work and how everyone is paid. LPT is the staking and coordination token, not the medium of exchange; compute is paid for in ETH. The coordination layer lives in smart contracts on Arbitrum One, which handle staking, reward distribution, payment settlement and orchestrator discovery.

Livepeer was created by Doug Petkanics and Eric Tang, who published the whitepaper in April 2017. It framed the problem plainly: decentralized applications had no open way to include streaming media, and existing solutions were centralized and expensive. The paper described a delegated proof of stake protocol for live video broadcast, including verification of transcoding work through Truebit style random spot checks backed by slashing.
The protocol first deployed on Ethereum and later moved its contracts to Arbitrum One, where staking, delegation and settlement happen today. Its scope has since widened from transcoding alone to a compute marketplace serving AI video inference, presented publicly as Livepeer 2.0. Stewardship is split across the Livepeer Foundation, Livepeer Inc. and the token holder community, with changes going through onchain governance.
Four layers sit above each other. Applications send requests. Gateways aggregate demand, select operators, dispatch jobs and handle payment. Orchestrators run the go-livepeer node, advertise which pipelines, models and codecs they support and at what price, execute work on GPUs, and collect payment. The Arbitrum contracts underneath handle staking, rewards, settlement and discovery. Selection runs one way: orchestrators do not choose their work, gateways rank them by capability, price, latency, reliability and stake.
Payment uses probabilistic micropayments. Instead of settling onchain per segment, gateways issue tickets priced in wei per pixel for video and per pixel or per millisecond for AI work, and only winning tickets are redeemed onchain. That keeps per job cost low enough for streaming.
Time is measured in rounds. Each round the protocol elects the active set, updates inflation state, lets active orchestrators mint rewards, and snapshots bonded stake for governance.
The whitepaper is explicit that LPT is not the medium of exchange: broadcasters pay ETH and operators earn ETH fees. LPT does three things. It is the bonding mechanism in a delegated proof of stake system, where bonding increases an orchestrator's effective stake and only the top orchestrators by total bonded stake sit in the active set for a round. Only active set members earn inflation and receive jobs, and Livepeer's public material describes that set as 100 orchestrators, a governance controlled value. It routes work, since gateways weigh stake among other selection factors. And it is the governance token: bonded LPT carries voting power in the onchain governor, which at the documentation's last verified reading required 100 bonded LPT to propose, a quorum of one third of voting power, and a ten round voting window.
Bonded holders also earn. Newly minted LPT each round is split between orchestrator and delegators by the reward cut, and ETH fees by the fee share, with inflation adjusting toward a 50 percent target bonding rate. Holding LPT unbonded is therefore not neutral, since unbonded holders receive none of that issuance.
Livepeer is one of few decentralized infrastructure networks where the work bought is both expensive and commoditized. Transcoding is a real, continuous GPU cost for anyone running video at scale, so cost comparisons are concrete rather than abstract. The payment layer is what makes it practical: probabilistic tickets let a gateway pay per segment without an onchain transaction per segment, which is what allows a streaming workload to settle on a blockchain at all. The AI pivot reused that structure rather than replacing it, so a single orchestrator node runs both a video pipeline and an AI pipeline on the same operator base and staking economics.
Against general purpose decentralized compute, Livepeer is narrower and more opinionated, built around video and video adjacent AI rather than arbitrary containers. Against media networks focused on content delivery and bandwidth sharing, its core product is processing rather than distribution. Against GPU marketplaces oriented to training or long running rented instances, its job unit is short, latency sensitive and streaming shaped.
One structural difference matters for holders: delegation is stake attribution, not custody transfer. Bonded LPT sits in the protocol contract on Arbitrum One and the orchestrator cannot move or spend it. The documentation is also candid that slashing is not currently active on mainnet, so a delegator's practical risk is operational rather than custodial.
Settlement security comes from Ethereum by way of Arbitrum One, where the contracts hold bonded stake and process rewards and payments. Bonded LPT is held by the BondingManager, not by orchestrators, so an operator cannot spend delegated tokens and only the delegator's wallet can unbond, withdraw or redelegate. Full withdrawal is delayed by an unbonding period, last verified in the documentation at seven rounds.
Economic security comes from stake sitting behind work, since stake determines active set membership and job routing. The original design specified slashing for failed or missed verification, applying to transcoder and delegators together, but the documentation states slashing is not active in current mainnet operation. Enforcement in practice is economic and reputational: an orchestrator that misses its per round reward call permanently forfeits that round's inflation for its whole pool, and delegators can redelegate without waiting out unbonding.
Livepeer is a working test of whether independent hardware operators can compete with cloud providers on a real, ongoing workload. Video processing is a good proving ground because it is expensive, continuous and easy to benchmark, so cost and quality claims are checkable. Its extension into real time AI video matters for the same reason: inference on video parallelizes naturally across many small jobs, which is where distributed GPU supply has a plausible structural advantage.
LPT is listed on a wide range of centralized exchanges and trades on decentralized exchanges, primarily on Arbitrum One and Ethereum. It exists as an ERC-20 token on both, with the Arbitrum deployment being where protocol activity such as bonding happens. Verify the contract address against the official documentation before trading or bridging. If your intent is to stake, holding LPT on Arbitrum One is the practical requirement, since delegation happens there rather than on Ethereum mainnet.
LPT is a standard ERC-20 token, so any Ethereum compatible wallet supporting Arbitrum One will hold it, and hardware wallets work with the Livepeer Explorer for bonding. If you delegate, bonded tokens stay in the protocol contract under your wallet's control rather than moving to the orchestrator, but withdrawal requires unbonding and waiting out the unbonding period. Exchange custody is simpler for trading but removes the ability to stake or vote.
