Ravencoin is a proof-of-work blockchain forked from the Bitcoin codebase and modified for one purpose: creating and transferring assets. Instead of a general-purpose virtual machine, it builds asset issuance into the protocol, so a user can create a named token, set its supply and divisibility, attach metadata and send it peer to peer using the machinery that moves the coin itself. RVN pays transaction fees, is burned to create assets, and rewards miners. The project describes itself as a chain carrying statements of truth about who owns what.

The Ravencoin whitepaper, "A Peer to Peer Electronic System for the Creation and Transfer of Assets," was published on 31 October 2017 by Bruce Fenton, Tron Black and Joel Weight. Mining binaries were released on 3 January 2018, the ninth anniversary of Bitcoin's genesis block, and the project emphasizes that launch as fair: no premine, no initial coin offering, no masternodes and no founder rewards. There is no company behind it, only core developers and the Ravencoin Foundation.
Ravencoin keeps Bitcoin's unspent transaction output model and proof-of-work consensus, then changes four parameters: one-minute blocks instead of ten, an original block reward of 5,000 RVN instead of 50, a supply cap of 21 billion instead of 21 million, and an ASIC-resistant mining algorithm, with the reward halving on a fixed schedule. That algorithm changed twice, from X16R to X16Rv2 and then, on 6 May 2020 at block 1,219,736, to KAWPOW, derived from ProgPoW and Ethash and leaning on consumer graphics card memory. No further forks are planned.
RVN has three concrete roles. It pays transaction fees. It is burned to create assets, with different amounts for main, sub, unique and reissued assets, an anti-spam measure tying asset creation demand to coin demand. And it rewards miners. There is no staking, no governance function and no protocol treasury.
Few chains treat asset issuance as a protocol-level primitive rather than a contract standard. On Ravencoin an asset is a first-class object recognized by consensus rules, so it cannot be created with a buggy contract or undermined by an unaudited owner function. Names are unique network-wide, so a ticker cannot be duplicated the way an ERC-20 symbol can.
Against smart contract platforms, Ravencoin trades expressiveness for safety: you cannot build arbitrary logic, but you also cannot lose funds to a flawed token contract. Against Bitcoin forks such as Litecoin and Dogecoin, which are payment coins, the asset layer gives it a distinct purpose. DigiByte is the closest comparison, also proof-of-work with an asset layer, but it uses multiple hashing algorithms.
Security comes from proof of work: miners expend energy to extend the chain, and rewriting history requires out-hashing the honest network. KAWPOW is designed so consumer graphics cards stay competitive, spreading hash power across many small participants rather than specialized farms. Asset rules are enforced by the same consensus that validates transactions, so an invalid operation is rejected, and the client is open source under MIT.
Ravencoin's security budget is a function of its hash rate, and a smaller proof-of-work chain is more exposed to a rented-hashrate attack. GPU mineability distributes mining but also means attack hash power can be rented. With no funded development entity, progress depends on volunteers and features have moved slowly. Creating a token here confers no legal right by itself, and issuers using restricted assets for securities bear full regulatory duty.
Ravencoin is a working argument that asset issuance does not require a general-purpose virtual machine. Its protocol-level asset model removes a class of failures that has cost users heavily on contract-based chains, and its fair launch remains unusual in a market where most tokens begin with large insider allocations.
RVN is listed on a number of centralized exchanges and available on some decentralized venues in wrapped form. It can also be mined directly with consumer graphics hardware, still a meaningful route under KAWPOW. The official website maintains an exchange list.
Ravencoin has official desktop wallets for Windows, macOS and Linux plus mobile wallets, and these support asset creation and transfer as well as RVN. Ledger hardware wallets support RVN, the safer option for larger balances. If you plan to hold assets, confirm your wallet supports the asset layer.
