Lighter is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange running on its own zero-knowledge rollup that settles to Ethereum. Order matching and liquidations execute off chain, then are proven cryptographically and verified publicly on Ethereum before any state update is accepted. Standard accounts, the default tier, trade at zero fees, while paid tiers serve professional flow. LIT is the platform's ERC-20 token.

Lighter's website and documentation do not publish a team page. Press coverage of the project's 2025 funding round identifies Vladimir Novakovski, a former Citadel engineer, as founder and chief executive. The site names backers rather than staff, listing Founders Fund, Ribbit Capital, Haun Ventures, Robinhood and Coinbase. The founding account is third-party reporting, not a protocol-documented fact.
Documentation describes Lighter Core as a verifiable compute engine for exchange operations rather than a general blockchain. A sequencer orders transactions first in, first out and executes them, giving soft finality at exchange speed. A purpose-built proving engine aggregates execution proofs into one batch proof, verified on Ethereum before the contracts holding deposits accept new state, and posted data blobs let users rebuild their own account state. A priority queue on Ethereum accepts withdrawals and pool exits, and if the sequencer stalls, an escape hatch freezes the contracts so users can exit directly.
LIT is used for staking and fee reduction. Documentation states each LIT staked unlocks up to 10 USDC of LLP deposit capacity, that staking currently pays a fixed 6% annual rate, and that unstaking carries a three-day lockup. Premium fee discounts begin at 1,000 LIT staked and reach the top tier at 500,000 LIT. The protocol says it repurchases LIT with trading fee revenue. Documentation does not currently describe LIT as a governance token.
Most venues ask users to trust that the matching engine behaved correctly. Lighter's claim is that this trust is unnecessary, since matching and liquidation are proven and checked on Ethereum, so an operator cannot quietly settle a bad fill. The fee model also inverts the usual arrangement: retail pays nothing and accepts higher latency, while professional flow pays for faster paths.
App-chain perpetual venues rely on their own validator set for correctness, while Lighter borrows Ethereum for verification and adds an escape hatch for sequencer failure. Automated market maker protocols price against a pool, whereas Lighter runs a central limit order book. The trade-off is a single sequencer for ordering and liveness.
Traders take leveraged perpetual exposure without depositing to a custodial exchange, and the real world asset markets extend that to commodities, equities, fixed income and pre-IPO exposure around the clock. Passive depositors allocate to Public Pools or supply the LLP, and market makers use the paid tiers and the documented API.
Invalid state transitions are rejected because proofs must verify, so matching and liquidation logic cannot be silently altered. Ethereum holds the deposited assets and the canonical state root, and posted data lets users rebuild balances independently. The escape hatch is the liveness backstop, and Lighter publishes audit reports and a disclosure policy.
Verifiability does not eliminate risk. The sequencer still controls ordering, so a stalled or censoring sequencer degrades the experience until the escape hatch is used. When the LLP cannot absorb a liquidation, auto-deleveraging closes opposing positions of other users without consent, and documentation notes account value can reach zero at the zero price. Staking rate, fee tiers and buyback policy can change.
Onchain derivatives have grown fast on venues where users cannot inspect the matching engine. Lighter tests whether an exchange can keep that performance while making its own behavior auditable.
LIT trades on centralized exchanges including Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate, KuCoin, MEXC and Upbit, and on Lighter's own spot venue. As an ERC-20 token it can also be swapped on Ethereum decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap. Confirm the contract address against official documentation first.
Any Ethereum-compatible wallet can hold LIT, including hardware wallets such as Ledger and Trezor and software wallets such as MetaMask. Staked LIT sits in the staking contract, so it carries contract risk and the three-day exit lockup. An exchange balance leaves custody with that exchange.
