Reserve Rights is the governance and staking token of Reserve, a protocol for creating asset-backed baskets that trade as one ERC-20 token. Reserve calls these Decentralized Token Folios, or DTFs, in two forms: Index DTFs, tracking a weighted basket of tokenized assets, and Yield DTFs, backed by yield-bearing collateral. RSR holders govern individual DTFs and can stake behind a Yield DTF as first-loss capital, earning a share of its revenue for taking default risk.
Official resources:
Reserve was co-founded by Nevin Freeman, chief executive, and Matt Elder, an engineer formerly at Google and Quixey. Backers included Peter Thiel, Sam Altman, Coinbase Ventures and Digital Currency Group. RSR launched in May 2019 after an initial exchange offering on Huobi Prime. The original goal was a basket-backed stablecoin resistant to currency devaluation. It later generalized, since machinery that backs a stablecoin can back an index.
A Yield DTF holds a basket set by governance, with ERC-20 assets made usable as backing through collateral plugins that expose price and default checks. Anyone can mint it by supplying the basket or redeem it into the underlying assets, so it tracks its backing by arbitrage rather than by promise.
RSR staked on a Yield DTF becomes stRSR, a transferable ERC-20. If a collateral token defaults the protocol can seize staked RSR pro rata, with detection from on-chain price checks rather than a manual vote, and unstaking carries a governance-set delay of roughly 7 to 30 days. Revenue splits two ways: the holder share melts DTF shares in a contract called the Furnace, raising the token rate against its basket, while the staker share is auctioned into RSR and added to the stRSR pool.
RSR has a fixed supply of 100 billion tokens, all pre-minted at launch. Its documented functions are governance and overcollateralization. Staking on a DTF grants voting rights over its configuration and a share of its revenue, and that same stake is seized first if collateral defaults, so the yield is not free.
Most stablecoin designs put the loss-absorbing layer inside an issuer's balance sheet, where users cannot inspect it. Reserve moves it on-chain and makes it opt-in: the buffer is whatever RSR is staked on that basket. The second unusual choice is per-DTF governance, so each basket carries its own voters, risk and revenue.
Sky, formerly MakerDAO, and Dai use a global governance layer and a system-wide surplus buffer, while Reserve isolates governance and backing per basket. Ethena backs its dollar with a hedged derivatives position, not an on-chain basket. Tokenized index products elsewhere rarely have a staked slashing layer.
Reserve contracts run on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum and inherit those networks' security. It has been audited by Trust Security in December 2024, Cantina in January 2025, Trail of Bits in April 2025 and Pashov in June 2025, and runs an Immunefi bug bounty with a stated maximum payout of $10,000,000. The canonical RSR contract on Ethereum is 0x320623b8e4ff03373931769a31fc52a4e78b5d70.
RSR staking is not a savings product. Staked RSR can be seized pro rata if a collateral asset defaults, and the unstaking delay blocks a quick exit when trouble appears. A DTF is only as safe as the assets governance chose, so basket composition is the real risk. Governance concentrates wherever stake is thin, and rebalancing auctions can execute poorly in illiquid conditions.
Reserve is one of few live attempts to make the buffer behind an asset-backed token explicit, on-chain and slashable rather than a promise on a private balance sheet. Paying holders to accept a visible first-loss position is a useful primitive, and RSR is how it is expressed.
RSR trades on major centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges across Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum. Because it exists on several networks, confirm the network and contract address before swapping, then check the markets list on this page.
RSR can be held in any EVM-compatible wallet on the network you bought it on, including hardware wallets such as Ledger or Trezor. Staking runs through the Reserve app, which converts RSR into stRSR for a chosen DTF. Verify addresses from the documentation before using any staking or bridging contract.
