Nillion is a secure computation network built around the idea of blind computation: storing and processing data that stays encrypted the whole time, so that no single node ever sees the underlying values. The project frames this as doing for high value private data what blockchains did for transactions. NIL is the network's utility token, used to pay for access to that infrastructure, staked by node operators, and paid out as rewards for verification work.
One fact matters more than any other when reading about Nillion: the network changed its home chain. Nillion originally launched a Cosmos-based Layer 1 called nilChain in March 2025. That chain was halted on March 23, 2026, and NIL now lives on Ethereum, with the project operating an Ethereum Layer 2 called Nillion Network. Any description that still presents nilChain as the live settlement layer is out of date.
Official sources:
Nillion's founding team is usually credited to Alex Page as chief executive, Andrew Masanto as chief strategy officer and Dr. Miguel de Vega as chief scientist, alongside other early contributors. The technical origin is a primitive the team calls Nil Message Compute, a multi-party computation approach in which nodes contribute to a computation without exchanging messages with one another.
The timeline that matters:
A live read of the Ethereum contract at 0x7cf9a80db3b29ee8efe3710aadb7b95270572d47 returns the name Nillion, the symbol NIL and 6 decimals, confirming the migrated deployment.
Nillion is best understood as two things stacked together: a set of privacy-enhancing technology services, and a network that verifies those services are behaving honestly.
Privacy services Data is either split into shares across independent nodes or processed inside trusted execution environments. In the share-based model no single node holds a complete value, and calculations can still run while the data stays encrypted.
Verification Nillion Blacklight is the verification layer. Permissionless, community-run nodes continuously challenge workloads running on Nillion's own confidential compute module and on other trusted execution environment providers, checking attestation reports and monitoring enclave behavior.
Coordination on an Ethereum Layer 2 The Nillion Network Layer 2 handles verification work assignment, staking and reward distribution. It has chain ID 98875, uses ETH as its currency symbol, and exposes a public RPC and block explorer.
Conditional secrets A separate network, Blacklight L1, reveals a payload only when an on-chain condition is met. It is on testnet only at time of writing.
Nillion's documentation is explicit that Blacklight L1 and Blacklight share a name and a token but not a chain or a purpose, and that Blacklight L1 is intended to replace the Layer 2 network, at which point the L2 mainnet would be deprecated.
Documented uses of NIL:
Because rewards come from a fixed annual pool while stake is variable, the effective yield falls as more NIL is staked. Nillion's documentation gives worked examples showing this relationship rather than advertising a fixed rate.
Nillion's design principle is that privacy technology should be adoptable piecemeal. The documentation commits explicitly to interoperability, modularity and portability, and accepts performance costs to get there: common languages, Python and TypeScript SDKs, a NoSQL storage model and REST APIs everywhere, so a developer can adopt one privacy feature without the whole architecture. The second distinctive element is treating verification of confidential compute as a neutral public service, since Blacklight verifies workloads on other providers' hardware, not only Nillion's own.
Security rests on several independent mechanisms. With share-based storage, any group smaller than the threshold learns nothing about a value. Verification is economically backed: nodes must stake NIL, and committees are chosen by stake weight. The conditional-secret design uses Shamir secret sharing with per-node encrypted layers and a keccak256 commitment made at posting time, so a wrong payload cannot be substituted at reveal. Settlement and data availability now rest on Ethereum rather than a sovereign validator set.
Most privacy work in crypto has focused on hiding transactions. Nillion targets a different and arguably larger problem: letting useful computation happen over data that must never be exposed, including AI workloads. Its willingness to abandon a sovereign chain, publish what its cryptography does not cover, and verify other providers' hardware makes it a serious reference point.
NIL trades on centralized exchanges and, since the migration, on Ethereum decentralized exchanges. Because the token moved chains, check that any deposit or withdrawal uses the Ethereum ERC-20 deployment rather than a legacy Cosmos address format.
NIL is often available on:
Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction.
Confirm the contract address against official documentation before transacting, and note that NIL uses 6 decimals rather than the more common 18.
