DigiByte is a proof-of-work UTXO blockchain that has produced blocks continuously since January 2014, using 15-second block times and five independent mining algorithms in parallel. It is a payments and asset chain rather than a smart-contract platform, with separate protocol layers adding issued assets, passwordless authentication and, since 2026, a native non-custodial stablecoin. Supply is hard-capped at 21 billion DGB, emitted on a monthly reduction schedule rather than through halvings.
Official resources:
DigiByte was created by Jared Tate, who describes himself on his own developer account as the DigiByte blockchain founder. He began the work in late 2013 as a set of modifications to the Bitcoin protocol and mined the genesis block on January 10, 2014, embedding a USA TODAY headline from that day about the Target data breach. There was no ICO or venture round; the official site records a 0.5 percent premine for giveaways and development, and states the project has no company and no CEO.
Blocks arrive roughly every 15 seconds, with five proof-of-work algorithms competing in parallel and each targeting an approximately equal share: SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit and Odocrypt, the last of which re-randomizes itself every 10 days to frustrate ASIC development. Difficulty is retargeted in real time per algorithm by DigiShield and its successor MultiShield, and issuance falls roughly one percent per month with no halvings.
DGB pays transaction fees, which the project describes as sub-cent and predictable, rewards the miners securing the chain, and is the fee asset for DigiAssets. Since 2026 it also serves as collateral, since DigiDollar is minted by time-locking DGB in on-chain reserves and redeemed by burning it.
Five parallel mining algorithms with per-algorithm real-time retargeting remain uncommon, and DigiByte has run that design longer than anyone else. Odocrypt, which mutates on a 10-day cycle, has no widely deployed equivalent, and a decade of upgrades has shipped without a foundation or treasury.
Litecoin secures with a single algorithm and halving-based emission, and Ravencoin uses one algorithm with a simpler asset model. Dash layers masternodes on proof-of-work for its service tier and treasury, which DigiByte avoids, and eCash adds an Avalanche-based post-consensus layer. DigiByte's separator is multi-algorithm consensus plus an unusually long unbroken record.
Fast low-cost payments and point-of-sale settlement, exchange transfers where 15-second confirmation matters, issuing tokens and certificates through DigiAssets, and passwordless login or access control through Digi-ID.
Security rests on proof-of-work across five algorithms plus thousands of independently operated full nodes, the argument being that an attacker must contend with five hardware ecosystems at once while MultiShield punishes hash-and-run mining. DigiDollar's price feed comes from a MuSig2 Schnorr oracle roster whose members co-sign each update into one aggregated signature.
Multi-algorithm mining has a flip side: each algorithm carries only a fraction of total hashpower, so attacking one costs less than attacking the whole chain, and MultiShield mitigates rather than eliminates that concern. SHA-256d and Scrypt share hardware with much larger chains, so rentable hashpower exists. Having no foundation protects against capture but means no funded team and no guaranteed maintenance path. DigiDollar is also new, and a stablecoin collateralized by one volatile asset carries liquidation, peg and oracle risk.
DigiByte is one of very few chains that can show more than a decade of continuous operation with no company behind it, and it introduced ideas, DigiShield above all, that other projects adopted. Its design is a long-running experiment in whether hashpower diversity beats concentration.
DGB has been listed for years across a broad set of centralized exchanges and is available through some instant-swap services. Check the live markets and pairs on this page for current venues. Because DigiByte is a base-layer coin there is no contract address to verify, but confirm you are withdrawing to a native DGB address.
Running DigiByte Core gives full independent validation with local keys, and pruned nodes have been supported since v9.26.4. Light wallets supporting DGB, DigiAssets and Digi-ID cover mobile use. DigiByte warns that DigiDollar minting happens only inside the official Core wallet and that binaries should come from the official GitHub releases.
