Monkeypox is an infectious viral disease that can occur in humans and some animals. Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms but milder, and include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash. Monkeypox virus, while rarely fatal, is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Through the second half of May 2022, monkeypox cases in multiple countries outside its endemic area were reported. On May 18, the United States confirmed its first case of monkeypox in 2022.
- This market will resolve to “Yes” if there are more than 10,000 total confirmed monkeypox/orthopoxvirus cases in the US according to the CDC by August 1, 2022, 8 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”.
- The resolution source for this market is reporting from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, currently publishing Monkeypox data at https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/response/2022/us-map.html.
- This market may resolve to "Yes" as soon as the resolution source reports more than 10,000 total confirmed cases by August 1, 2022, 8 PM ET. This market may not resolve to "No" until August 1, 2022, 8 PM ET has passed.
- If the CDC's website is unreachable, OurWorldInData will be used instead: https://ourworldindata.org/monkeypox.
