ConstitutionDAO was a single purpose crowdfunding effort that formed in November 2021 to buy a rare first printing of the United States Constitution at auction. PEOPLE is the ERC-20 token that contributors received in exchange for sending ether to the campaign. The bid failed, the organisation wound down, and full refunds were made available. What remains is a token with an explicit disclaimer from its own creators: the ConstitutionDAO website states the tokens have no rights, governance or utility other than redeeming them for ether from the smart contract held in Juicebox. PEOPLE continues to trade today as a community and meme asset with no organisation behind it.
Official resources:
ConstitutionDAO was assembled in a matter of days by a loose group of crypto contributors organising publicly on Twitter and Discord in November 2021. It was never incorporated as a company with named executives, and the project's own site does not list a founding team, so no formal leadership can be identified from official documentation. Contemporaneous reporting described a core group of volunteers coordinating the fundraising, legal structuring and bidding.
The campaign raised roughly forty seven million dollars worth of ether from more than seventeen thousand contributors in about a week. On 18 November 2021 the group placed a bid at Sotheby's and lost to Ken Griffin, chief executive of the hedge fund Citadel, whose winning bid was reported at approximately forty three million dollars. The gap was not the headline number but the reserve needed for insurance, storage and display of the document, which limited how high the DAO could go.
Afterwards the core team chose to wind down. The site says the project has run its course, having accomplished what it set out to do, raise capital, bid at auction, and on losing make full refunds available as promised.
There is no longer an operating protocol. The mechanism that still exists is the original Juicebox funding contract on Ethereum. Contributors sent ether and received PEOPLE at a rate of one million PEOPLE per ether. After the auction, the same contract was used in reverse: holders can return PEOPLE and redeem ether at that original one to one million ratio, less gas. The site describes this as the only function the token has.
At the time of the wind down, holders were also offered an alternative, a separate governance token called We The People, or WTP, claimable one for one without paying gas for those who preferred to stay involved in successor efforts. ConstitutionDAO explicitly stated it could not and would not endorse any future plans for the token.
The surviving components are few and deliberately so. The Juicebox funding and redemption contract on Ethereum holds the refund logic. The PEOPLE ERC-20 contract records balances. A Snapshot space exists for off chain signalling, though the project disclaims governance. Everything else, the Discord organisation, the bidding entity and the multisig operations, was dissolved. There is no treasury being managed, no roadmap and no development team.
By the project's own account, PEOPLE has one function: redemption for ether from the Juicebox contract at the original contribution rate. It confers no governance rights over any organisation, no claim on assets beyond that redemption, no staking and no fee share. Its market activity is driven by community sentiment and its status as an early and widely recognised symbol of decentralised crowdfunding, not by any cash flow or protocol utility. Anyone evaluating PEOPLE should treat it as a meme and collector asset rather than as a claim on a going concern.
ConstitutionDAO is unusual because it succeeded at the hard parts and failed at the easy one. It proved that thousands of strangers could coordinate tens of millions of dollars in days, place a credible bid at a major auction house, and then return the money in full when the plan failed. Very few crypto fundraising events have ended with complete, voluntary refunds. It is also unusual in that its creators actively discouraged further speculation on the token rather than pivoting the project into something new, which is the more common path.
Compared with governance tokens of live protocols, PEOPLE has no protocol. Compared with typical meme coins, it has an unusually specific and verifiable origin story and a real redemption backstop in a contract that still exists. Compared with other collector or PolitiFi tokens tied to public figures, it is tied to an event and a document rather than to a person, and no organisation profits from its trading. The closest structural comparison is to other single purpose DAOs of that era, most of which either dissolved quietly or converted into ongoing collectives.
The practical uses today are narrow. Original contributors can redeem their tokens for ether through Juicebox. Traders treat PEOPLE as a liquid community token on Ethereum. Educators and researchers use it as a case study in decentralised fundraising, auction participation and post mortem refund mechanics. It is not used to govern anything, fund anything or access any product.
Security here means contract security, not network security. PEOPLE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and inherits Ethereum's settlement guarantees. The refund path depends on the Juicebox contracts, which are open source and were audited and widely used at the time of the campaign. Because there is no active team, there are also no admin keys being actively managed and no upgrade cadence, which removes one class of risk while removing all maintenance. There is no multisig actively holding user funds beyond what the redemption terminal contains.
This is a token whose own creators warn against treating it as an investment. Its site states plainly that nothing there is financial advice and that the project cannot endorse future plans for the token. There is no team, no roadmap, no revenue and no development. Price is driven entirely by sentiment and narrative cycles, which makes it highly volatile. Wrapped and bridged versions of PEOPLE exist on other chains and carry additional bridge risk and different contract addresses, so verify what you are buying. Anyone relying on the redemption path should confirm the Juicebox contract state independently rather than assuming it behaves as described years later. Finally, the name attracts imitators, and lookalike tokens are common.
ConstitutionDAO remains one of the clearest demonstrations of what open coordination can and cannot do. It showed that a leaderless group could raise serious money quickly and act in the real world, and it showed the limits of that model when it came to holding, insuring and displaying a physical asset. Its handling of the aftermath, offering full refunds and refusing to convert the community into a new product, set a standard that later projects are frequently measured against. That is the reason the token retains cultural weight long after the organisation stopped existing.
PEOPLE is an Ethereum ERC-20 token and trades on decentralised exchanges on Ethereum as well as on a number of centralised exchanges that listed it after the 2021 campaign. Listings and pairs change over time, so check current availability on the venue you use. Before trading, confirm the contract address against the token page on Etherscan linked above, because copies and bridged versions circulate under the same ticker on other networks.
Any Ethereum compatible wallet will hold PEOPLE, including MetaMask, Rabby or a Safe multisig for shared holdings. Hardware wallets from Ledger or Trezor keep private keys offline and are the sensible choice for balances you intend to hold. Self custody also preserves the ability to interact with the Juicebox redemption contract directly, which is not possible from an exchange account. As always, back up your recovery phrase offline and add the token by contract address rather than by searching the ticker.
