Oasis is a layer 1 proof of stake blockchain built so applications can keep data confidential while staying verifiable. Its defining feature is Sapphire, an EVM compatible runtime where contract state and payloads can be encrypted, so Solidity contracts can be private, public, or in between. Consensus is separated from execution, letting parallel runtimes called ParaTimes handle different workloads. ROSE pays gas and secures the chain.
Official resources:
The network grew out of Oasis Labs, founded in 2018 by Dawn Song, a computer science professor at UC Berkeley known for her work in security and cryptography. Oasis Labs was an early technical contributor and drew backing from several well known venture funds. Development is now stewarded by the Oasis Protocol Foundation, which maintains the repositories. A mainnet beta ran in October 2020 and the full mainnet launched that November; Sapphire came later.
Oasis splits the stack in two. The consensus layer is a proof of stake chain run by a decentralized validator set, handling ordering, staking and governance. Above it, the ParaTime layer hosts parallel runtimes, each a replicated compute environment, so a heavy workload in one does not slow another. Confidentiality comes from trusted execution environments: state and inputs are handled inside secure enclaves, with Intel SGX cited in the docs, so nodes execute code without seeing plaintext.
ROSE pays gas, secures block proposal and validation, funds staking rewards, and carries governance votes, alongside uses inside ParaTimes. Holders who do not run a node can delegate to a validator; delegated balances appear as escrow and reclaiming them requires a debonding period. ROSE moves into ParaTimes through deposits and withdrawals rather than ordinary transfers.
Privacy on most chains is built at the application level, through zero knowledge circuits developers design themselves. Oasis makes confidentiality a property of the execution environment, so an ordinary Solidity contract holds private state without a bespoke proving system. The trade is a lower barrier to confidential applications, at the cost of relying on hardware enclaves rather than cryptography alone.
Aleo and Dusk pursue confidentiality with zero knowledge proofs, which give cryptographic rather than hardware assurances but constrain how contracts are written. Zama computes on ciphertext with fully homomorphic encryption, and Phala Network uses enclaves but is mainly off chain compute for other chains. Oasis is unusual in offering a general purpose confidential EVM as a first class layer 1 runtime.
Typical applications include private decentralized finance, identity systems that verify attributes without exposing them, DAO voting that stays secret until it closes, tokenized assets with confidential holder data, and machine learning on sensitive datasets.
Validators stake ROSE to secure the consensus layer, with delegators adding weight and penalties tied to behaviour. The ParaTime layer adds discrepancy detection, where committee results are checked against each other so incorrect execution can be disputed. Confidentiality relies on enclaves, which shifts part of the trust model onto the hardware vendor.
The main caveat is reliance on hardware enclaves. Side channel vulnerabilities in them have been found repeatedly by researchers, and a serious break would weaken confidentiality in ways pure cryptography would not. Privacy oriented assets also face regulatory pressure and have been delisted by some exchanges. Confidential application usage remains small, and delegation carries slashing risk and a debonding delay.
Most real world data cannot be put on a public ledger, which caps what blockchains can be used for. Oasis is one of the longest running attempts to lift that cap, with an execution environment that is confidential by default and still EVM compatible.
ROSE trades on many centralized exchanges and, in bridged form, on decentralized exchanges; a wrapped contract exists on BNB Chain. Availability varies by jurisdiction, so check the official site and verify any contract address first.
ROSE can be held in the official wallet or third party wallets supporting the consensus layer, several of which support hardware wallets. Balances used on Sapphire sit in an EVM compatible wallet after deposit. Delegated stake must finish debonding before it can move.
