Golem Network is an open-source, decentralized computing platform for renting out spare machine capacity. Golem was started in Poland by Julian Zawistowski with Andrzej Regulski, Piotr Janiuk and Aleksandra Skrzypczak, and first presented at Ethereum's DevCon 0 in 2014. A Requestor posts a job and a price, Providers advertise available CPU, memory, storage and GPU capacity, and the two sides agree through the marketplace. The workload runs on the Provider's machine and payment settles on-chain in GLM. Golem is not a blockchain itself: it is an off-chain compute market using Ethereum, and later Polygon, purely as a settlement rail. Large jobs split into subtasks that run in parallel.
GLM is a payment token, not a governance or staking asset. The official token page says it "is used to access the Golem Network and is the currency used in peer-to-peer transactions for renting idle digital resources." Requestors bid GLM, Providers earn it, and on Arkiv it pays for data writes. It is an ERC-20 on both Ethereum and Polygon, and the Polygon deployment keeps payment fees from swamping small jobs.
Golem is one of the oldest continuously developed decentralized compute projects, live since 2016 and still shipping. Its defining choice is that it runs no chain: matching and execution happen off-chain, and the blockchain is used only for payment.
Render targets GPU rendering and inference with a curated node base. Akash Network runs its own Cosmos chain and leases containers through an on-chain auction. iExec RLC pairs off-chain compute with trusted execution environments and result verification. Golem is a general-purpose permissionless marketplace: broad workload types, no chain, no hardware requirement, and weaker guarantees about result correctness.
There is no Golem consensus layer to attack. Payments inherit the security of Ethereum and Polygon, and Providers execute untrusted code inside a constrained runtime rather than directly on the host system. Counterparty selection is economic, through payment terms and reputation, rather than proof-based, because verifying an arbitrary off-chain computation remains unsolved across this category.
Golem competes with commercial clouds and a crowded field of decentralized compute networks, and real paid utilization is the number that matters. Because results are not cryptographically verified, sensitive work means trusting the Provider and the sandbox. GLM has no staking or fee-burn sink, so demand tracks usage. The project has also repositioned repeatedly, from CPU compute to GPU and AI to data infrastructure, and each pivot resets the adoption clock. Arkiv remains early.
Golem was one of the first serious attempts to build a market for idle computing capacity, predating the DePIN label now used for the category. Its operating history, open-source stack and working SDKs give it credibility newer entrants must still earn.
GLM trades on major centralized exchanges, and the official Golem site points users to Binance, Coinbase, Gate.io and, on-chain, Uniswap. As an ERC-20 on Ethereum and Polygon it is also on decentralized exchanges on either network. Check which network an exchange withdraws on, since the two deployments are not interchangeable without a bridge.
Any Ethereum-compatible wallet holds GLM, including MetaMask, Rabby and Trust Wallet. For larger balances, a Ledger or Trezor paired with an EVM interface keeps the key offline.
