What Is EigenLayer (EIGEN)?

EigenLayer is an Ethereum protocol that introduces restaking, which its documentation calls a "marketplace for trust" connecting restakers, operators and Autonomous Verifiable Services. Users deposit native ETH, liquid staking tokens, EIGEN or other ERC-20 assets into its contracts, and that stake then backs the correct operation of other services rather than Ethereum consensus alone. Since 2025 the wider Eigen Labs product line has been branded EigenCloud.

Who Founded EigenLayer? (History)

EigenLayer was founded by Sreeram Kannan, previously a professor at the University of Washington, and is developed by Eigen Labs. The restaking thesis was published as research first, and the network opened in stages to restakers, operators and then services. EIGEN became transferable on October 1, 2024.

How EigenLayer Works

Restakers deposit assets and delegate to operators through a double opt-in, so both sides must agree. Operators run the software a service requires and perform its validation tasks. AVSs are the systems being secured: data availability layers, oracles, bridges and similar. Rewards let an AVS pay operators and delegators when the service runs correctly, and slashing lets it burn stake when commitments break, scoped through operator sets so an operator exposes only part of its stake to each service.

Key Ecosystem Components

EigenDA is the data availability service used by rollups to publish transaction data. EigenCompute provides verifiable off-chain computation, and EigenVerify handles programmable dispute resolution where developers define what counts as a fault.

EIGEN Token Utility

The white paper defines a work token as one staked to perform digital work that can be slashed for misbehavior. Restaking already makes ETH a universal objective work token, but slashing still only reaches faults provable on-chain. EIGEN covers intersubjective faults, defined as tasks "for which any two reasonable, observant humans will agree whether a digital worker failed to carry out the task correctly," such as an oracle reporting a false price.

Enforcement uses a forking token. A challenger bonds EIGEN and forks it, and social consensus decides which fork is legitimate. To insulate ordinary holders the design splits it in two: bEIGEN for intersubjective staking, and EIGEN as a wrapper for uses such as DeFi. EIGEN can also be restaked alongside ETH.

What Makes EigenLayer Unique?

Most staking systems bind one token to one enshrined task. EigenLayer separates them and adds enforcement for faults no contract can prove. The white paper calls the two complementary: "ETH staking powering objective fault slashing and EIGEN staking powering slashing for intersubjective faults."

How EigenLayer Differs from Similar Projects

Liquid restaking protocols such as ether.fi and Renzo sit on top of EigenLayer rather than competing with it, issuing receipt tokens and selecting operators for depositors. Lido is liquid staking for Ethereum consensus alone, while EigenLayer extends stake to arbitrary services. Celestia runs its own validator set, whereas EigenDA draws on shared security.

Use Cases of EigenLayer

Holders direct existing stake toward extra services for extra rewards, and operators extend a node business without recruiting new delegators. Builders skip bootstrapping a validator set and token before launch, covering rollup data availability, oracle networks, bridges and verifiable execution for AI agents.

How EigenLayer Is Secured

The protocol is a set of Ethereum smart contracts and inherits Ethereum settlement. Economic security comes from stake at risk: operators who break commitments lose allocated stake, and the loss falls on them and their delegators. Withdrawal lags give faults time to surface before stake exits.

Risks and Considerations

Restaking layers risk: the same stake backing several services means a correlated failure or a widespread operator error can hit many positions at once, which the documentation covers under slashable stake risks. Slashing is irreversible, and delegators bear it even though operators do the work. Intersubjective forking is novel and depends on social consensus behaving as modeled under adversarial conditions. Smart contract risk applies to the core protocol, to each AVS and to each product built on top.

Why EigenLayer Matters

EigenLayer turned shared security from a research idea into a product category. If it holds up, new networks stop needing their own validator set and token merely to be trusted.

Where Can You Buy EigenLayer (EIGEN)?

EIGEN trades on centralized exchanges including Binance, OKX, Bybit, Kraken and Coinbase Exchange, mostly against stablecoin pairs. On-chain it is an ERC-20 on Ethereum and also exists on Base, with liquidity on Uniswap. Confirm the contract address before trading on-chain.

Storage Options After Purchase

Any Ethereum compatible wallet can hold EIGEN, and a hardware wallet keeps keys offline, which matters because restaking involves granting contract approvals. If you restake, you delegate to an operator and the position stays subject to withdrawal delays and slashing. On an exchange, the venue controls the keys.
