Polymesh is a public permissioned layer 1 blockchain built specifically for regulated assets and capital markets. It uses the Substrate framework and nominated proof-of-stake consensus, but differs from general purpose chains in a fundamental way: identity, compliance and settlement rules are enforced at the protocol level rather than left to each application. Anyone can read the chain's public state, while interacting with on-chain assets requires a verified identity. POLYX is the native utility token, used to pay fees, secure the chain through staking and signal support in governance.

Polymesh grew out of Polymath, a security token company founded in 2017 by Trevor Koverko and Chris Housser. Polymath first built security token tooling on Ethereum, then concluded that a general purpose chain could not enforce the identity and transfer restrictions regulated securities require, and designed a purpose-built chain instead. Polymesh mainnet launched in October 2021. The network is now stewarded by the Polymesh Association rather than by Polymath as a company, and development has continued through major releases including the v8 upgrade that reached testnet and then mainnet during 2026.
Polymesh is organized around five pillars: identity, compliance, confidentiality, governance and settlement.
Identity is the foundation. Participants complete customer due diligence through a recognized provider and receive an on-chain identity, and assets and permissions attach to that identity rather than to a bare address. The chain is public in that its state is openly readable and permissioned in that a control layer gates who may interact with assets. POLYX is the exception: it can be held and transferred without a verified identity, while other on-chain assets cannot.
Compliance is enforced by protocol-level rules rather than application code. An issuer defines the conditions under which their asset may be held or transferred, and the chain enforces them on every transfer, so a compliant path is the only path. Settlement is designed for instructions that either complete or do not, rather than the partial states that arise when asset and payment legs sit in separate systems. Governance runs through a Governance Council alongside Polymesh Improvement Proposals that POLYX holders signal on.
Confidentiality is the pillar to check most carefully. The project markets confidential asset capability, and developer documentation describes confidential assets as a pre-release feature available on testnet. Verify current status in the docs rather than assuming it applies to mainnet.
The token page lists four functions: fee payment for transaction and protocol fees, network security through staking under nominated proof-of-stake, governance signaling on Polymesh Improvement Proposals, and economic incentives that align node operators and the nominators backing them through rewards and penalties.
Staking involves two roles. Node operators are permissioned entities that produce and validate blocks. Nominators stake POLYX behind operators they choose and share in rewards and in the consequences when an operator misbehaves. Unlike most proof-of-stake networks, becoming an operator is not open: candidates must be licensed financial entities and must be approved through on-chain governance. Note again that POLYX is the one asset on Polymesh that does not require a verified identity to hold or transfer.
Most blockchains treat compliance as something applications bolt on. Polymesh moves it into the base layer, which produces a different set of guarantees. An issuer does not have to trust that every venue and wallet touching their security enforces the transfer rules, because the chain will not process a transfer that breaks them. Identity is not an optional widget in front of a permissionless ledger; it is a prerequisite for holding the asset at all. The permissioned validator set follows from the same logic: if the chain carries regulated securities, having block production run by licensed entities approved through governance is a deliberate design choice.
Against Ondo, Centrifuge and most tokenized asset protocols, Polymesh is infrastructure rather than a product. Those projects issue or structure specific assets, usually on general purpose chains; Polymesh is the chain such assets could be issued on. Against Dusk, which targets the same regulated market but stays public permissionless and uses zero-knowledge proofs to reconcile privacy with compliance, Polymesh takes the opposite route with a permissioned participation layer and verified identity as the gate. Against Chintai and similar regulated tokenization platforms, Polymesh is a base layer third parties build on rather than a single operator's venue. Against Ethereum, the trade is explicit: permissionless participation and general composability are given up for enforcement guarantees a permissionless chain cannot make.
Polymesh uses nominated proof-of-stake. Node operators produce blocks and vote on finality, and nominators stake POLYX behind them, with rewards and penalties applying to both roles so nominators have a financial reason to choose carefully. The distinguishing property is the permissioned operator set: only licensed financial entities can run block-producing nodes, and they must be approved through on-chain governance. That raises accountability, since block producers are identified regulated businesses rather than anonymous participants, but it also concentrates block production in a smaller gated group, which is a different risk profile rather than a strictly better one. Above consensus, the compliance layer is itself a control from an issuer's point of view, since an incorrect transfer is rejected by the protocol instead of requiring remediation afterwards. The node software is open source and publicly auditable.
The tokenized securities thesis has been argued for years, mostly by putting regulated instruments on chains never designed to hold them and wrapping them in off-chain legal and operational controls. Polymesh is the most complete attempt to invert that: build the chain around the requirements first and accept the loss of permissionless participation as the cost. It is a clean test of whether regulated markets actually want a purpose-built ledger or will settle for general purpose chains with compliance middleware.
POLYX is listed on a number of centralized exchanges. Because POLYX is the one asset on Polymesh that can be held without a verified identity, acquiring the token does not itself require completing customer due diligence, though interacting with assets issued on the network does. Confirm that a venue supports Polymesh network withdrawals before moving funds, and check the deposit network carefully.
POLYX is held in the Polymesh Wallet or other wallets supporting Polymesh accounts, and managed through the Polymesh Portal for staking and governance. Verify hardware wallet support against current documentation before committing a large balance. Self-custody is required to stake behind a node operator or signal on improvement proposals yourself rather than leaving the balance on an exchange.
