What Is Optimism (OP)?

Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 network and, more broadly, the project behind the OP Stack, an open-source codebase used to run many rollups. The flagship network, OP Mainnet, is an optimistic rollup that executes transactions off Ethereum and posts data back to it, using chain ID 10 and paying gas in ETH rather than OP. The OP token is a governance asset, deployed at 0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000042 on OP Mainnet, carrying voting power in the Optimism Collective. Total supply was set at 4,294,967,296 tokens.

Who Founded Optimism? (History)

Optimism grew out of the research group Plasma Group, whose members founded the entity now known as OP Labs. OP Mainnet went live in 2021, the OP token launched with a governance airdrop in 2022, the Bedrock upgrade in 2023 rebuilt the stack for closer Ethereum equivalence, and fault proofs went live in June 2024. Legal and stewardship functions sit with the Optimism Foundation, a Cayman Islands entity accountable to Collective governance.

How Optimism Works

Transactions are executed on the Layer 2 by a sequencer, batched, and posted to Ethereum, where the data is available for anyone to reconstruct the chain. Withdrawals rely on state proposals, which can be challenged for roughly a week after submission. Disputes are resolved through a permissionless dispute game that anyone can join by running a node and the op-challenger tool. Since June 2024 both proposing and challenging are open rather than whitelisted.

OP Token Utility

OP is a governance token, not a gas token. Holders vote directly or delegate to representatives in the Token House, whose responsibilities include vetoing protocol upgrade decisions made by the Developer Advisory Board, approving budgets and grants, electing councils, and ratifying governing documents. Delegates are expected to vote in roughly 70 percent of proposals a year. OP is also the currency of ecosystem incentive programmes.

What Makes Optimism Unique?

Two things. First, the OP Stack is genuinely reused: other major chains run it, so improvements propagate across a family of networks. Second, governance is bicameral. Alongside the token-weighted Token House, a Citizens' House votes one member one vote, with seats allocated to chains, applications and end-users under published eligibility rules such as top-15 chains by revenue. That is an explicit attempt to stop capital alone deciding outcomes.

How Optimism Differs from Similar Projects

Arbitrum is the closest peer, also an optimistic rollup with a governance token, but with a different fault proof design and a single-house DAO. ZKsync, Starknet and other validity rollups replace the challenge window with cryptographic proofs, a different cost and latency profile. Several other Layer 2 tokens sit on chains that are downstream of Optimism's own codebase.

How Optimism Is Secured

Security derives from Ethereum. Transaction data is posted there so the chain can be reconstructed, and correctness is enforced by fault proofs, where an invalid state proposal can be challenged and defeated on Ethereum. Safeguards remain: a Security Council acts as Guardian and can pause withdrawals or reject roots during an airgap window, and protocol upgrades pass a Developer Advisory Board review plus a seven-day veto period.

Risks and Considerations

Optimistic rollups impose a challenge window, so native withdrawals take about a week unless a third-party bridge fronts liquidity. Sequencing is not yet fully decentralised, creating censorship and liveness dependencies. Emergency powers held by the Security Council are a deliberate trade-off but a centralisation vector. OP has no fee or revenue claim, so its value rests on governance rights and ecosystem demand. A substantial share of supply is allocated to programmes that distribute over time.

Why Optimism Matters

Optimism turned rollup software into shared infrastructure and paired it with an unusual governance experiment. The OP Stack underpins a large share of Ethereum Layer 2 activity, so choices made here affect far more than one chain.
