Immutable is an Australian company building blockchain infrastructure and growth tooling for video games. Its core product is Immutable Chain, an Ethereum-connected network for game economies, paired with Passport, a wallet and identity layer that hides crypto complexity from players. IMX is the chain's native token: it pays gas there, exists as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, and can be staked.

Immutable was founded in 2018 by brothers James and Robbie Ferguson with Alex Connolly, originally as Fuel Games, the studio behind Gods Unchained. It rebranded in 2019 and shifted to supplying infrastructure. Immutable X, its first rollup, launched with StarkWare as a customized StarkEx deployment, and in 2023 Immutable partnered with Polygon Labs on Immutable zkEVM. Per its own documentation, Immutable X "was merged into Immutable Chain in early 2026." The company received an SEC Wells notice in November 2024 over its 2021 IMX distribution, which the SEC closed in March 2025 without enforcement action.
Immutable Chain is built from a geth fork and stays close to Ethereum semantics. Mainnet uses chain ID 13371, targets roughly two-second blocks and finality, and uses EIP-1559 pricing with a 10 gwei minimum priority fee. Documented deviations include rejected blob transactions, a PREVRANDAO opcode that always returns zero, and several disabled RPC namespaces. Anyone can run a node, but public nodes forward transactions to the Immutable RPC rather than gossiping, and private nodes require allowlisting, so sequencing is operated by Immutable.
IMX is the gas currency on Immutable Chain and an ERC-20 on Ethereum, and the documentation states it is "issued by the IMX Ecosystem Foundation." It is a fee asset: the official token site states 20% of the protocol fee on every transaction must be paid in IMX, and that this share is "reserved for rewards for active ecosystem participants." It is also a governance asset, voted on Snapshot.
Most gaming chains sell block space. Immutable sells a full commercial stack: a chain, a wallet that removes seed phrases and gas from the player experience, an orderbook, engine SDKs and growth tooling.
Ronin grew out of one hit game. WEMIX is a Korean gaming Layer 1 run by publisher Wemade, and Gala runs a games platform with first-party studios. Immutable behaves more like a platform vendor: EVM-equivalent, settling to Ethereum, and sold to third-party studios. The counterweight is a chain more centralized than a general-purpose Layer 1.
Immutable Chain is anchored to Ethereum, and the documentation describes the bridge contracts as live, audited and monitored. The Immutable X migration ran through a non-custodial bridge upgrade, with the docs noting Immutable "had no access to your private keys or funds during this process" and citing a Nethermind audit. Node software is published openly as the immutable-geth fork, but security still rests on Immutable sequencing honestly.
Sequencing is not permissionless, so users carry operator risk a decentralized chain would distribute. Blockchain gaming has repeatedly failed to convert player interest into durable revenue, and IMX fee capture depends on studios shipping games people keep playing. The Immutable X deprecation is also removing legacy interfaces and older SDK packages.
Immutable is one of the few blockchain gaming companies that survived a full cycle and ended with distribution across hundreds of studios rather than one hit title. Its work on invisible wallets and sponsored gas addressed the biggest reason players bounced off web3 games.
IMX is listed on many large centralized exchanges. On-chain it trades as an ERC-20 on Ethereum at the address in Immutable's documentation, and moves to Immutable Chain through the canonical bridge, which credits native IMX on arrival. Withdrawals accept native IMX or wIMX, its wrapped form.
On Ethereum, IMX is a standard ERC-20 and works in MetaMask, Rabby, Trust Wallet or a Ledger or Trezor. On Immutable Chain it is the native currency: add the network using chain ID 13371 and the official RPC. Passport is the first-party option, built for players rather than traders, using social login instead of a seed phrase, which changes the custody model.
