SKALE is a network of Ethereum-compatible, application-specific blockchains that share one pooled validator set. Its most distinctive design choice is that end users do not pay gas. Each SKALE Chain uses a valueless internal gas token called sFUEL, which cannot be bought and is handed out by faucets or by the application itself, so transaction costs are borne by the project running the chain rather than by the person clicking the button.
SKL is the network's token, but it is deliberately not the gas token. SKL is used to stake and delegate to validators, to pay for SKALE Chain capacity, and to vote in the SKALE DAO.

SKALE Labs was co-founded in 2018 by Jack O'Holleran, chief executive, and Stan Kladko, chief technology officer. An initial testnet followed in 2018, and the network moved to a phased mainnet beginning in mid-2020.
The SKL distribution in 2020 was notable for a staking-first sale structure, in which purchasers had to delegate their tokens to validators before they became transferable. The token is deployed on Ethereum as an ERC-777 hybrid utility contract, with bridged ERC-20 representations on SKALE chains and on Base. A live read of the Ethereum contract at 0x00c83aeCC790e8a4453e5dD3B0B4b3680501a7A7 returns the name SKALE, the symbol SKL and 18 decimals.
More recently the project has repositioned around privacy-preserving execution and machine-to-machine payments, describing itself as infrastructure for autonomous agents and building support for standards such as x402 and ERC-8004. That is a genuine shift in emphasis from the earlier gaming-first framing, so prefer current documentation over older third-party material.
SKALE separates the validator pool from the chains it runs, which is what allows many independent chains to share one security and staking layer.
Pooled validators and containerized subnodes Validators run SKALE nodes, and each node is divided into containerized subnodes. Subnodes are assigned to individual SKALE Chains rather than a validator dedicating a whole machine to one chain. Assignment is randomized and rotated over time, so a chain's committee is not a fixed, self-selected group.
Asynchronous BFT consensus Each SKALE Chain runs a leaderless asynchronous Byzantine agreement protocol, a variant of asynchronous binary Byzantine agreement from the academic literature, tolerating fewer than one third Byzantine nodes.
Data availability proofs Before a proposal can be voted on, the proposer broadcasts it, collects signature shares from two thirds of the committee, and merges them into a data availability proof that every vote must carry. This prevents a node winning consensus on a block nobody else received.
BLS threshold signatures and finality Committees hold BLS key shares generated through a joint-Feldman distributed key generation process on the altBN256 curve. Once a proposal collects a threshold signature the block is final, and two blocks cannot both reach one at the same height, so there are no reorganizations and no waiting for confirmations.
Anchoring on Ethereum The SKALE Manager contracts on Ethereum mainnet hold the staking, delegation and chain allocation logic, and store each chain's BLS public key. Coordination therefore settles against Ethereum even though execution does not.

On supply, the documented design sets a maximum of 7,000,000,000 SKL, of which 4,140,000,000 existed at genesis. The remaining 2,310,000,000 SKL, or 33 percent of the maximum, is scheduled to be minted as network issuance across the life of the network, front-loaded toward the early years. Rewards are paid per epoch and combine that issuance with fees from chain operators.
The point that catches most newcomers is worth restating: SKL is not spent on transactions. Users transact with sFUEL, which has no market and cannot be purchased.
Compared with rollups, SKALE does not post execution data or proofs to Ethereum for settlement. It is a set of independent chains with their own committees, anchored to Ethereum only for staking and coordination. That gives it a very different cost structure, which is what makes zero gas fees economically possible, and a very different security argument, since a SKALE Chain does not inherit Ethereum's security the way a rollup does.
Compared with other appchain frameworks, the distinguishing feature is the shared validator pool with random rotation rather than each chain bootstrapping its own set, plus a payment model where the project pays for the chain and the user pays nothing.
Security rests on the staked validator pool, the asynchronous BFT protocol with its one-third fault tolerance bound, threshold signatures that make forks impossible at a given height, and data availability proofs that stop a proposer committing an unpublished block. Random assignment and periodic rotation reduce the chance that a hostile group controls one chain's committee, and staking, delegation and chain allocation are enforced by contracts on Ethereum.
SKALE is one of the longer-running attempts to answer a simple question: what does a blockchain look like if the user never has to think about gas? Its answer, a shared validator pool running many containerized chains with a valueless internal gas token, has been in production long enough to have a real track record rather than a whitepaper argument. Whether or not its newer agent and privacy positioning succeeds, the zero-fee execution model remains a distinct point in the design space.
