What Is OriginTrail (TRAC)?

OriginTrail is a decentralized knowledge network built around the Decentralized Knowledge Graph, which stores structured information and gives AI systems a persistent memory with provenance attached. Published information becomes a Knowledge Asset, an ERC-721 token with a permanent identifier so its origin can be checked. TRAC pays to publish into the verifiable layer and to stake on the nodes that serve data.

Who Founded OriginTrail? (History)

OriginTrail was founded by Tomaz Levak, Ziga Drev and Branimir Rakic, who began working together in 2013 on supply chain data for food producers. The obstacle was trust, not storage: participants would not accept each other's records.

From 2016 they experimented with blockchains and concluded a layer was missing between the chain and the application. The first whitepaper followed in 2017 and TRAC was issued as an ERC-20 in early 2018. Trace Labs, co-founded by the team, is the core developer.

How OriginTrail Works

Memory is separated into three layers. Working memory is private to one agent, shared working memory is visible to selected peers, and verifiable memory is published, stored across nodes and anchored on chain. Only that last layer requires TRAC.

Published items become Knowledge Assets, minted as ERC-721 tokens carrying provenance commitments and addressed by a Universal Asset Locator that stays stable as content is updated. Core nodes hold on-chain profiles and stake TRAC, while edge nodes are local gateways.

TRAC Token Utility

TRAC pays for publication. Writing a Knowledge Asset, updating it or extending its life costs TRAC, and a treasury fee, three percent by default and capped at ten, is taken from staker rewards on each paid operation.

The second role is commitment. Publishers lock TRAC into a Publishing Conviction Account for a fixed window and receive tiered discounts, documented at ten percent for 25,000 TRAC and rising to seventy five percent at one million. Stakers back nodes through transferable positions with lock tiers carrying reward multipliers, from one times with no lockup to six times at twelve months.

What Makes OriginTrail Unique?

The project argues that AI needs symbolic, structured memory with checkable origin rather than only statistical retrieval. That produces an unusual combination: knowledge as a graph, ownership of each unit as an NFT, an identifier that survives updates, and multi-chain anchoring.

How OriginTrail Differs from Similar Projects

The Graph indexes data that already exists on blockchains, so its scope is chain data rather than arbitrary knowledge. Ocean Protocol treats data as a tradable asset and emphasizes compute over private datasets. VeChain treats traceability as a purpose-built layer 1, and the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance builds agent frameworks, not a knowledge substrate.

How OriginTrail Is Secured

Provenance commitments travel with each Knowledge Asset, so a consumer can verify content against its on-chain record rather than trusting the serving node.

Risks and Considerations

• The network is mid-migration. Version 10 is live with Gnosis as the default for new nodes, NeuroWeb mainnet not yet selectable, and staking migrating.
• Token demand depends on publishing volume, so the fee sink stays small if few organizations publish.
• The economics are complex, with conviction accounts, lock tiers and multipliers raising the barrier to entry.
• Enterprise adoption cycles are long and pilots do not always convert.

Why OriginTrail Matters

As more content is machine-generated, checking where a claim came from becomes infrastructure rather than a nicety. OriginTrail has worked on that for over a decade, with a live network and a token economy tied to publishing rather than speculation alone.

Storage Options After Purchase

TRAC on Ethereum and Base is a standard ERC-20 and works with any EVM wallet, including hardware wallets. Staking toward a node or committing to a conviction account requires the token on the network where that contract lives.
