Fractal Bitcoin is a separate blockchain that runs the Bitcoin Core codebase with different parameters, aiming to give Bitcoin style assets a faster and cheaper place to live without abandoning Bitcoin's rules, address formats, or tooling. FB is its native asset, used to pay transaction fees, run and stake with indexing services, and participate in network incentives.
The project describes itself as an extension of Bitcoin rather than a Layer 2 or a sidechain, and that distinction is worth taking seriously. There is no rollup, no validity proof posted to Bitcoin, and no two way peg for BTC. What Fractal does have is merged mining with Bitcoin for part of its block production, a thirty second target block interval instead of ten minutes, and the OP_CAT opcode enabled, which Bitcoin itself does not have.
Official sources:
Fractal is led by UniSat, the Bitcoin wallet and Ordinals marketplace team, together with Block Space Force, a web3 investment and development firm. Lorenzo, a director at UniSat, has been the most visible core contributor. There is no single named founder in the way there is for many chains, and the project is best described as contributor led with UniSat maintaining much of the core infrastructure.
The timeline is short. Testnet activity began in July 2024, a public testnet followed in August 2024 with OP_CAT activated, and mainnet launched in September 2024. The launch was not without controversy: the token distribution, and in particular the pre-sale and contributor allocations, drew criticism from parts of the Bitcoin community that view any pre-mine as at odds with Bitcoin's launch history.
Development has continued since. FIP-101, the Index Mining and staking proposal, moved through public testing stages during 2026 and reshapes how block rewards are distributed by paying indexers and the FB holders who stake behind them.
Four mechanisms define the network.
Bitcoin Core as the base Fractal runs Bitcoin Core code with modified parameters rather than a new virtual machine. That is why Bitcoin address formats, script rules, wallet libraries, and asset protocols such as BRC-20 and Runes work with little adaptation.
Cadence Mining Block production alternates between two modes. On average two of every three blocks are mined permissionlessly by anyone with suitable hardware, and one of every three is merged mined with Bitcoin. Merged mining lets Bitcoin miners secure Fractal with the same work they already perform, and major pools have participated, with the project citing a large share of Bitcoin's hashrate involved in merged mining Fractal.
Faster blocks The target block interval is around thirty seconds rather than Bitcoin's ten minutes, which is where the throughput and confirmation latency improvements come from.
OP_CAT and CAT20 Fractal enabled OP_CAT, a concatenation opcode disabled on Bitcoin, which makes richer script constructions practical. CAT20 is the Fractal native token standard built on that capability, allowing programmable issuance and transfer logic while staying inside Bitcoin's UTXO model.
FB is a distinct asset from BTC. There is no native peg that converts one into the other. Assets move between Bitcoin and Fractal through application level bridging, such as UniSat's bridge for BRC-20 tokens, which means the usual bridge trust and operator questions apply.
FB has a fixed maximum issuance of 210 million tokens, a deliberate echo of Bitcoin's 21 million. Published allocation figures are 50 percent to proof of work mining rewards, 15 percent to an ecosystem treasury, 10 percent to community grants, 15 percent to core contributors, 5 percent to a pre-sale, and 5 percent to advisors, with contributor, pre-sale, and advisor tranches locked for seven months and released linearly to twelve months. Treasury and grant tranches are released over a decade, and the documentation states that the time locked portions are secured with Bitcoin's OP_CLTV timelock mechanism.
Documented uses of FB:
Reward parameters have changed during the FIP-101 rollout, moving through staged percentages before reaching full index mining rewards, so check current documentation before relying on any specific figure.
The clearest differentiator is the refusal to introduce a foreign execution environment. Almost every other Bitcoin scaling effort either adds an EVM, adds a new consensus system, or wraps BTC into another chain. Fractal keeps Bitcoin's script model and adds OP_CAT, which lets developers experiment with expressive Bitcoin scripts in a live environment rather than in a proposal document.
The second is Cadence Mining. Splitting block production between merged mined and permissionless blocks is an unusual compromise between borrowing Bitcoin's hashrate and keeping mining open to newcomers.
The third is FIP-101, which treats indexing as a first class, rewarded network role. Indexers are usually invisible infrastructure funded by whoever needs them. Paying them from block rewards and letting token holders stake behind them is a genuine design choice rather than marketing.
Security comes from proof of work, with a hybrid structure. The merged mined portion of blocks is backed by Bitcoin miners contributing hashrate they already produce, and the project has cited a majority of Bitcoin's hashrate participating in merged mining. The permissionless portion is open to any miner.
That hybrid is a strength and a caveat at once. Merged mining borrows meaningful security, but Fractal's own chain has a fraction of Bitcoin's economic weight, and the permissionless blocks are secured only by whatever hashrate chooses to point at Fractal. Reorganization and attack economics on Fractal are not Bitcoin's, and should not be assumed to be.
Fractal is one of the few live environments where Bitcoin native ideas can be tested at scale rather than argued about. It runs Bitcoin's own code, keeps Bitcoin's asset model, and has enabled an opcode that Bitcoin developers have debated for years. Whether or not FB itself endures, the network functions as a public experiment in what a more expressive, faster Bitcoin would actually look like in practice, and that has value to anyone following Bitcoin's scaling debate.
FB is listed on a number of centralized exchanges, and it can also be earned through mining or acquired on Fractal native marketplaces. Availability varies by region and by venue, so check current listings directly. Because Fractal uses Bitcoin address formats, take extra care to confirm you are sending FB to a Fractal address and not to a Bitcoin one, since the formats look similar.
FB has traded on several international exchanges since its 2024 mainnet launch, and mining pools including large Bitcoin pools have supported merged mining. Listings change, so verify with the exchange rather than relying on a static list.
