Casper is a public, permissionless layer 1 blockchain pairing proof of stake with WebAssembly smart contracts. Its mainnet went live in March 2021 and it is stewarded by the Casper Association, a Swiss non-profit. It is positioned around bringing real-world assets and regulated processes on-chain, using natively upgradable contracts and protocol-level access control. CSPR pays for computation and is the asset validators bond.
Official resources:
Casper was built by CasperLabs, founded in 2018 by Mrinal Manohar and Medha Parlikar as chief executive and chief technology officer. Mainnet and the Casper Association both launched in March 2021, with the Association taking over stewardship, and CSPR was distributed in part through a public sale on CoinList. Leadership has changed since: the May 2025 Casper 2.0 announcement quoted Matt Schaffnit as chief executive and Michael Steuer as chief technology officer.
Validators bond CSPR to produce blocks, and holders who do not run nodes delegate stake for a share of rewards. The original consensus protocol, Highway, was replaced by Zug in the Casper 2.0 upgrade that reached mainnet on May 6, 2025, moving the chain to deterministic finality. Execution is WebAssembly based, contracts are usually written in Rust, and Casper 2.0 added multiple virtual machines running in parallel on one chain rather than pushing workloads to a rollup. Unspent gas is refunded to the sender.
CSPR pays gas and is the staking asset for validators and delegators, and because chainspec changes are enacted by the validator set, stake carries governance weight. Fee handling is itself a governance question: a forum proposal titled "Enable Burning Mechanism", posted in June 2025, sought to switch the chainspec to burning transaction fees outright, and drew strong validator support. Confirm in the release notes whether it is active, since chainspec settings change with upgrades.
Contracts are natively upgradable at protocol level rather than through proxy patterns. Accounts and contracts support weighted permissions and multi-signature rules directly, which maps onto how businesses actually authorize actions. The chain also runs more than one virtual machine natively, so execution environments can be added without moving applications to a separate layer.
Ethereum scales mainly through rollups, while Casper keeps execution on the base layer and adds VMs there. Cardano and Tezos share the emphasis on formal rigor and on-chain upgrades, but Casper's differentiator is enterprise permissioning and first-class upgradability. Against fast-finality chains generally, its claim is auditability rather than throughput.
Security rests on bonded CSPR and on how widely validators are distributed. Under Zug, finality is deterministic, so threatening finalized state requires controlling a large share of stake rather than out-producing honest blocks. Node software is developed openly, and protocol changes pass through public proposals before validators enact them.
General purpose layer 1s are the most crowded category in crypto, and developer mindshare is hard to win. The real-world asset thesis depends on regulated institutions actually deploying, which is slow and uncertain. Casper 2.0 rewrote consensus and execution, and upgrades that size carry implementation risk. Fee burning creates scarcity only in proportion to real usage, and governance runs through validators, so stake concentration concentrates decisions.
Casper is one of the few layer 1s that put enterprise-shaped requirements into the base protocol rather than leaving them to applications. It is a distinct answer to a real question: what a chain should look like if the assets on it are regulated instruments.
CSPR trades on a range of centralized exchanges, and the project's site points to venues including Kraken, Crypto.com and OKX. Availability varies by jurisdiction. CSPR is a native layer 1 coin, so withdrawals go to a Casper address, not an Ethereum or Solana one.
CSPR needs a wallet supporting the Casper network. Commonly used options include the Casper browser extension wallet and the wallet built into cspr.live, both of which allow delegating to a validator. Hardware wallets listing Casper support keep keys offline for larger balances. Exchange custody leaves you without the keys and usually without delegation.
