Because amounts remain visible, Verge has generally faced less exchange delisting pressure than fully shielded coins, though it is still often grouped with them.
Verge is secured by proof of work across five algorithms, each with its own difficulty retarget, which in principle raises attack cost because an attacker must contend with several independent hash markets.
That defense has been tested and found imperfect. In April and May 2018 Verge suffered timestamp manipulation exploits that let an attacker dominate individual algorithms and mine blocks improperly. The multi-algorithm design limited the damage, since the attacker could not capture the entire chain, but the incidents were real and were patched afterwards. Verge is a long-running counterexample to the idea that blockchain privacy must mean cryptographic concealment of the ledger. It made the case early that network metadata is a serious leak and that a wallet should ship Tor rather than expect users to add it, an argument that has aged well even where Verge's own implementation has been criticized. As a still-maintained 2014 chain with no corporate owner, it is also a useful data point on volunteer-led protocol maintenance over a decade.
