Orchid is a decentralized bandwidth marketplace and the consumer VPN app built on top of it. Instead of a monthly subscription to one company, a user funds an account and pays providers by the moment for the traffic they actually use, and can chain several providers into a multi-hop circuit so no single one sees both who you are and where you are going.
OXT is Orchid's ERC-20 token on Ethereum, at 0x4575f41308ec1483f3d399aa9a2826d74da13deb. A live read of that contract on September 11, 2026 returned Orchid for name(), OXT for symbol(), 18 decimals, and a total supply of exactly 1,000,000,000 OXT.

Orchid Labs began in 2017 with an unusually credentialed founding group: Dr. Steven Waterhouse, a co-founder of Pantera Capital; Jay Freeman, author of Cydia, the alternative app store for jailbroken iPhones; Brian Fox, the original author of the Bash shell; and Gustav Simonsson, a former security researcher at the Ethereum Foundation.
The whitepaper, "Orchid: A Decentralized Network Routing Market," laid out a payment and routing design intended to make bandwidth a metered commodity rather than a subscription. The network, the token and the VPN application launched together in December 2019.
Since then the product has widened beyond bandwidth. Orchid now describes itself as a decentralized physical infrastructure marketplace covering AI inference and storage as well as VPN service, using the same account and payment machinery.
The core of Orchid is a payment invention, not a networking one. Micropayments at packet scale are impossible on a public chain because the fees exceed the payment. Orchid's answer is probabilistic nanopayments.
Tickets instead of payments The client sends what the documentation calls a scratch lottery ticket: a signed message with a configurable win rate and value. Most are worth nothing; occasionally one wins and is redeemed on-chain. Over many tickets the provider receives the correct expected value while on-chain transactions stay rare.
Accounts with a funder and a signer An Orchid account splits control. A funder wallet on the settlement chain owns the account and alone controls deposits and withdrawals. A separate identity keypair, held by the client, signs tickets. Compromising the signing key does not hand over the account.
A deposit that acts as collateral Alongside the spendable balance, an account holds a locked deposit that determines ticket value and prevents double spending. Unlocking it starts a mandatory one-day cool-off before withdrawal, which is what makes the ticket scheme safe for providers to accept.
A staking directory for provider selection Providers stake OXT in an Ethereum smart contract to advertise service. The client picks a provider at random, weighted by stake, so a provider's chance of being selected equals its share of total stake. The design deliberately makes it costly to flood the directory with fake providers.
Accounts work on more than one chain. The documentation describes purchased accounts funded in xDAI on Gnosis, and states the design works on any Layer 1 where the lottery contract is deployed. Provider staking and the directory itself live on Ethereum.
OXT has two genuine roles:
One point deserves emphasis because it is frequently misstated. Orchid's own documentation is explicit that staking OXT is not a yield program. There is no inflation funding staking rewards, and the only income in the system is customers paying for bandwidth. A provider stakes to win traffic and earns only if it serves traffic.
The other point is that OXT is no longer the sole funding currency. Orchid accounts can be funded with other assets, including xDAI on Gnosis, which broadens usability but also means OXT demand is not mechanically tied to every unit of service sold.
The probabilistic nanopayment design is the real contribution, and remains one of the more elegant answers to metered pay-per-use on a public chain. It survives the obvious attack because a ticket is worthless until it wins, and a provider can verify win probability without trusting the client.
Multi-hop circuits are the second distinguishing feature. A conventional VPN asks you to trust one operator completely; Orchid lets a user chain providers so no single hop holds the full picture, which is a structurally different trust model rather than a stronger promise.
Orchid also never required an account, an email address or a subscription, which is a meaningful privacy property in a category where the provider's customer database is often the weakest link.
Against commercial VPN providers, Orchid replaces a single trusted company and a monthly bill with a marketplace and per-use payment, trading convenience and consistency for a weaker trust requirement.
Against other decentralized physical infrastructure networks such as Helium or Filecoin, Orchid has no inflation-funded incentive program. Providers are paid by customers, not by token emission. That is a harsher growth model and a more honest one.
Against privacy coins such as Monero, Orchid solves an entirely different problem. It obscures network-level metadata, not transaction graphs, and the two are complementary rather than competing.
Orchid's security rests on Ethereum settlement for its contracts, on the deposit cool-off that makes ticket acceptance safe, and on the stake-weighted directory that makes provider spoofing expensive.
The OXT contract itself is unusually clean, and this is worth stating plainly because so many tokens described as fixed-supply are not. A live inspection of the contract's function set on September 11, 2026 found only the standard ERC-20 interface: name, symbol, decimals, totalSupply, balanceOf, transfer, transferFrom, approve, allowance and the allowance increase and decrease helpers. There is no mint, no burn, no owner, no pause function and no proxy. The 1,000,000,000 OXT total supply is genuinely fixed in code, the entire amount was created at deployment, and no party can issue more or freeze a transfer.
The strongest security caveat is not about the token, though. Routing privacy depends on provider behavior. A provider that logs traffic can log traffic, and multi-hop reduces but does not eliminate the risk that colluding hops reconstruct a session.
Orchid is one of the few decentralized physical infrastructure projects that shipped a working consumer product and refused to prop it up with token emissions. The probabilistic nanopayment design has outlived a lot of louder ideas from the same period and remains a reference point for anyone building metered on-chain payments. The current pace is slow and worth knowing before buying the narrative, but the code is open, the contract is immutable, and the product still runs.
OXT is listed on a number of centralized exchanges and trades on decentralized exchanges on Ethereum. Coverage has thinned over the years, so availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction and should be checked on the venue directly.
OXT has commonly been available on:
If the goal is to actually use Orchid, funds must be moved into an Orchid account, where the funder wallet retains withdrawal control and the deposit portion is subject to a one-day unlock delay.
