Radix is a layer 1 network built specifically for decentralized finance, and XRD is its native token, used to pay transaction fees and to secure the network through staking to validator nodes. What separates Radix from most smart contract platforms is its execution model. Instead of treating tokens as balances inside arbitrary contracts, the Radix Engine treats assets as native objects the virtual machine understands, so tokens move, are held and are returned without each application reimplementing that logic. Developers write in Scrypto, a Rust-based language, and users approve human-readable transaction manifests rather than opaque calldata.
Radix has been running continuously since 2021 and development is still active, though the organizational picture changed significantly in 2026. The core repositories were being updated in the days before this page was written, while the Radix Foundation itself moved to maintenance mode and began transferring stewardship to an elected community body.
Official sources:
Radix was founded by Dan Hughes, who began the underlying consensus research well before the public launch, with RDX Works and later the Radix Foundation as the organizations behind it. The roadmap is named after ancient cities and has four milestones.
Asset-oriented execution Radix Engine handles tokens, non-fungible resources and vaults as first-class primitives with rules enforced by the engine. A blueprint defines behavior, a component is an instance of it, and assets cannot simply vanish through a coding error the way a balance mapping can be corrupted.
Scrypto and transaction manifests Scrypto is Rust with the asset model built in. A transaction manifest describes step by step, in plain language, what a transaction will do, and the Radix Wallet shows that to the user before signing.
Cerberus consensus Radix runs delegated proof of stake, with XRD staked to validator nodes that produce and validate blocks. The deployed form of Cerberus is unsharded. The sharded version that underpins the long-standing scalability claims is still ahead of the network rather than behind it.
Native token behavior The XRD resource is minted and burned by the protocol itself. Reading the resource's role assignments through the public gateway shows the minter and burner roles gated by a system transaction badge rather than by any externally held key, so emissions and fee burning happen as ledger operations, not as discretionary actions by a person or a multisig.
XRD is not a fixed-supply token. Twelve billion XRD existed at the Olympia genesis, and a further twelve billion is scheduled to be emitted as staking rewards over roughly four decades, giving a documented long-term maximum of twenty-four billion XRD, with emissions in the region of three hundred million per year. Reading the resource directly through the public gateway on 11 September 2026 returns total minted of about 13,531,771,514 XRD against total burned of about 7,805,182 XRD, the difference being the supply in existence. Fees burn XRD, so the two counters move independently.
Note that a separate ERC-20 token, EXRD, exists on Ethereum as a wrapped representation from the pre-mainnet era. It is a different contract from native XRD, and in 2026 the bridge route between them was made permissionless using Hyperlane.
The asset-oriented virtual machine is the substantive differentiator. On most platforms a token is a contract that happens to follow a standard, so a bug in that contract is a bug in the token. On Radix the engine enforces resource behavior, which structurally removes several categories of error that have caused real losses elsewhere. Transaction manifests are the user-facing counterpart: a wallet can tell you what a transaction will actually do because the format was designed to be describable.
Radix is not EVM compatible, which is the central trade-off. Ethereum-compatible chains inherit an enormous tooling, auditor and liquidity ecosystem; Radix chose a cleaner execution model and accepted a smaller one. Compared with Cardano, which also took a research-led approach, Radix's claims center on developer safety and eventual sharded scalability rather than formal verification. Compared with Cosmos, which scales by giving each application its own chain, Radix aims at a single shard space with atomic composability preserved, which is the promise Xi'an is supposed to deliver and has not yet.
Security rests on delegated proof of stake, with XRD staked to a validator set and unstaking subject to a protocol delay. Stake concentration among the top validators is the usual metric to watch and is publicly visible through the dashboard and gateway. At the application layer, the asset-oriented engine reduces some classes of contract risk but does not remove logic errors, oracle manipulation or governance failure. Client software is open source.
Radix is one of the few layer 1s that rejected the account-and-balance model outright rather than optimizing it, and the asset-oriented approach it built instead has influenced how people think about safe token handling. It is also, in 2026, an unusually clear test of whether a chain can survive the withdrawal of its founding foundation. The code is open, the validators are independent and the treasury is passing to an elected body, so the next year will show whether community stewardship is a real model or only a slogan.
XRD is listed on centralized exchanges and trades on Radix-native decentralized exchanges. Availability and pairs vary by jurisdiction. Take care to distinguish native XRD from the Ethereum-based EXRD token, since they are different assets on different ledgers.
XRD is often available on:
Pairs are commonly quoted against USDT and BTC where supported.
XRD can be held on an exchange in custodial form or withdrawn to the official Radix Wallet, available for iOS, Android and as a browser extension, which is the standard way to stake and to use Radix applications. Hardware support is available through Ledger paired with the wallet. Because Radix is not EVM compatible, standard Ethereum wallets cannot hold native XRD, so confirm you are withdrawing to a Radix account address and not an Ethereum one.
